Escalating Violence in Central Districts
The intensifying dispute has seen a significant spike in violence since early August. According to a report by the newspaper “Reforma,” seven homicides were recorded in August, followed by at least four more in the first days of September. These killings have primarily occurred in neighborhoods such as Morelos and Peralvillo, areas historically associated with organized crime activity.
Authorities have consistently attributed these homicides to the ongoing power struggle between the two rival groups, both of whom maintain a strong presence in the Tepito neighborhood, a notorious hub for illicit trade.
Key Incidents and Victims
Among the victims of this escalating violence is Lizeth Yuridia, also known as “La Chofis,” who was identified as an operator and collaborator for Óscar Andrés Flores Ramírez, alias “El Lunares.” Flores Ramírez is one of the imprisoned leaders of La Unión Tepito, suggesting that the killings are targeting key figures within the organizations.
The first homicide recorded in September was that of Luis N., known as “El Chilaquil.” He was gunned down in the Peralvillo neighborhood on September 4, less than a year after his release from prison, indicating a swift return to criminal activities or a targeted reprisal.
Homicide Statistics Versus Criminal Capacity
Despite official government reports indicating a decrease in overall homicide rates in Mexico City, security specialist Jesús Gallegos warns that this trend does not necessarily translate into a diminished criminal capacity or a reduction in violence. Gallegos argues that criminal organizations may be adopting more strategic and selective approaches to violence.
“Fewer homicides do not necessarily mean less criminal capacity: violence can become more selective, focused, and strategically directed,” Gallegos stated in an interview. This suggests that while the sheer number of killings might decrease, the impact and message conveyed through targeted assassinations can be even more potent.
Vulnerabilities: Funerals as Targets
Gallegos highlighted a particularly disturbing trend: funerals related to organized crime have become potential high-risk targets. These gatherings, meant for mourning, inadvertently create vulnerable spaces for family members, friends, associates, and others connected to the deceased.
“Attacking during a funeral or immediately afterward communicates that the capacity for retaliation even reaches spaces socially reserved for mourning. It is a form of communicative violence: the material objective may be a person, but the psychological recipient is much broader,” Gallegos emphasized. Such acts serve not only to eliminate rivals but also to send a chilling message of dominance and ruthlessness to the wider criminal underworld and the public.

The persistent violence in central Mexico City underscores the complex challenges faced by local authorities in curbing organized crime. Despite numerous arrests and operations, the power vacuum created by the incarceration of leaders often leads to intensified internal conflicts and turf wars as new factions vie for control.
