CDMX Cyber Police Alerts Public to Rising ‘Phantom Deposit’ Scam

Mexico City, February 7 – The Mexico City Cyber Police (SSC) has issued a critical warning about a growing fraudulent practice known as the ‘phantom deposit’ scam. This sophisticated scheme targets individuals selling high-value items online, such as vehicles, cell phones, and computers, by deceiving them into releasing merchandise before actual payment is received.

The surge in digital commerce has unfortunately created new avenues for criminals. According to the SSC, fraudsters exploit sellers’ urgency and lack of awareness to execute these scams, which are becoming increasingly prevalent on social media and various second-hand platforms.

How the ‘Phantom Deposit’ Scam Operates

Authorities have outlined a consistent modus operandi employed by these scammers:

  • Building Trust: The supposed buyer expresses keen interest in the item, readily agrees to the price without negotiation, and pushes for an immediate transaction.
  • Fake Proof of Payment: To ‘confirm’ payment, they send a manipulated screenshot or an edited document that appears to be a legitimate bank receipt.
  • Pressure for Delivery: The scammer insists that the transfer has been completed and demands prompt delivery of the product, often suggesting a meeting on the same day.
  • Consummation of the Deception: The seller, trusting the fake deposit image, hands over the item before verifying the funds in their account. The buyer then disappears, and the payment never materializes.

Cybersecurity experts highlight that these fraudulent proofs are often created using editing applications or templates designed to mimic official bank documents perfectly. In some instances, criminals use fake emails to further legitimize their false claims.

Recommendations to Avoid Falling Victim

The SSC has provided several preventive measures for individuals engaging in online sales:

  • Real Bank Verification: Never deliver any product until you have directly confirmed the funds are available in your bank account. Images are not sufficient proof.
  • Beware of Urgency: A buyer demanding ‘express’ delivery or refusing to wait for payment validation is a significant red flag.
  • Identity and Reputation Check: Review the interested party’s profile, references, and platform history.
  • Secure Channels: Prioritize recognized payment methods and avoid transfers from third-party accounts or suspicious links.
  • Evidence Documentation: Save conversations, phone numbers, product photos, and any other data that could be useful for a complaint.

If you suspect you have been a victim, it is crucial not to confront the scammer. Instead, immediately file a report with the Public Ministry or the Cyber Police. Providing chat screenshots, the fake receipt, and profile details will aid the investigation.

Authorities emphasize that no banking institution will ever request merchandise delivery to ‘release’ a payment, and accreditation times can vary. In case of doubt, always contact your bank directly through official channels.

A Growing Problem

Civil organizations note that digital fraud has escalated since the pandemic, as more people turned to online buying and selling. A lack of financial literacy and excessive trust are factors criminals exploit. Experts therefore stress that prevention is the most effective tool. Double-checking, avoiding isolated meeting locations, and utilizing platforms with buyer and seller protection systems can make the difference between a successful transaction and a financial loss.

The Cyber Police Unit offers 24-hour assistance to citizens via phone at 55 5242 5100 extension 5086, email at [email protected], and their official social media networks.

The message is clear: in digital commerce, the money must be in your account before the product is released. Any other promise could be the beginning of a ‘phantom deposit’.
