Mexico City, June 22 – The Chabacano station on Metro Line 2 of Mexico City’s subway system is set to reopen on Tuesday, June 23, completing the comprehensive renovation of the line. Head of Government Clara Brugada made the announcement during the reinauguration of the Taxqueña-Portales section of Line 2, which had undergone significant upgrades in preparation for the World Cup.

Metro Line 2 Fully Operational After Extensive Renovations

With the reopening of Chabacano station, which serves as a crucial interchange point for Lines 2, 8, and 9, Metro Line 2 will once again operate at full capacity, connecting Taxqueña to Cuatro Caminos. This marks a significant milestone in the city’s efforts to modernize its public transportation infrastructure.

On Monday, June 22, Brugada Molina led the reinauguration of the renovated stations of Taxqueña, General Anaya, Ermita, and Portales. During the event, she highlighted the importance of Chabacano station, which was the only remaining station to be reopened after the extensive intervention program.

“It was the only station missing, and with this, all the stations that were intervened are now open,” Brugada stated in a press conference.

Significant Investment in Modernizing Metro Line 2

The renovation project for Metro Line 2 involved a historic investment of 2.2 billion pesos. According to the capital government, 1.5 billion pesos were contributed by the federal government through the National Infrastructure Fund (Fonadin), with the remaining 700 million pesos provided by the local administration.

A substantial portion of this budget, approximately two-thirds, was allocated to the maintenance of tracks, trains, and electromechanical systems. This focus on unseen but critical infrastructure underscores the commitment to improving the long-term reliability and safety of the Metro system.

Key Works Undertaken:

  • Major track maintenance
  • Train rehabilitation
  • Modernization of electrical systems
  • Renovation of hydraulic installations
  • Update of fire suppression systems
  • Replacement of electronic equipment
  • Acquisition of specialized equipment for conservation and operation

Seven Trains Recovered, Improving Service Frequency

One of the most impactful outcomes of the renovation work is the recovery of seven trains that were previously out of service. These trains underwent comprehensive maintenance, including mechanical repairs, replacement of electronic systems, and renewal of components such as springs, windows, and ventilators.

As a result, Metro Line 2 has increased its operational fleet from 27 to 34 trains. This expansion is expected to significantly reduce waiting times for passengers and improve the overall frequency of service, enhancing the daily commute for thousands of Mexico City residents.

Visible Improvements for Passengers

Beyond the internal infrastructure upgrades, the renovation project also brought about noticeable improvements for users. The intervened stations feature renewed floors, walls, and roofs. New video surveillance systems, electronic turnstiles, and enhanced equipment have been installed to bolster security and streamline daily operations.

The reopening of Chabacano station and the completion of Line 2 renovations represent a major step forward in Mexico City’s ongoing efforts to provide a more efficient, safe, and modern public transportation experience for its citizens and visitors alike.
