Chihuahua Farmers Announce Road and Rail Blockades in National Strike
Ciudad Juárez, April 6, 2026 – Agricultural producers from the state of Chihuahua have announced a national strike, commencing today, April 6, 2026, with blockades on roads and railway lines. This action, which also includes transporters, aims to pressure the federal government to meet previously established commitments.
Eraclio “Yako” Rodríguez, leader of the National Front for the Rescue of the Mexican Countryside, confirmed the decision following a meeting with representatives of producers and transporters from at least 20 states across the country.
Key Protest Points in Chihuahua
In Chihuahua, blockades are planned for sections such as Jiménez, as well as toll booths in the state capital. The potential takeover of railway lines is also being considered. Specifically, in Ciudad Juárez, protesters will intervene on the Pan-American Highway at kilometer 20. However, it has been clarified that, for now, blockades at international border crossings are not contemplated.
The main action in Ciudad Juárez is scheduled for 10:00 AM today on the Pan-American Highway, at kilometer 20, which is expected to be one of the most visible protest points in the region.
Demands and Justification for the Strike
Rodríguez stated that the agreement includes remaining on roads and railway lines for as long as necessary until federal authorities address the commitments made at the end of last year.
He emphasized that the goal is for the day to proceed peacefully, without confrontations, but with the firm intention of generating pressure to achieve changes in public policy related to the agricultural sector. The agricultural sector is facing a productivity crisis stemming from a lack of fair prices and the negative effects that, they assert, the Free Trade Agreement has had on national production.
Additionally, Rodríguez denounced security problems on the country’s roads, attributing them to the lack of response and commitment from federal police forces responsible for surveillance. He also highlighted the lack of support for the families of transporters who have been victims of violence, noting that the state must assume responsibility for guaranteeing security and support for those affected.
Economic Impact and Previous Warnings
Local businesses in Ciudad Juárez have previously expressed concerns about the economic impact of such blockades. Business leaders explained that Juárez requires a continuous flow of essential products such as food, fuel, medical supplies, and basic necessities to maintain its daily operations. An interruption could have significant consequences for the city’s functioning and its residents.
Broader Context of the Protests
This national strike is part of a growing wave of discontent among agricultural producers and transporters across Mexico. Similar protests have occurred in various regions, highlighting systemic issues within the agricultural sector and broader concerns about government support and security.
The duration and full impact of the blockades will depend on the government’s response to the protesters’ demands. Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the planned actions.
