Ciudad Juárez Commemorates 115th Anniversary of its Capture, Highlighting its Role in Mexican Revolution
Ciudad Juárez, May 8, 2026 – Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar attended a historical reenactment marking the 115th anniversary of the Capture of Ciudad Juárez. This significant event, organized by the Institute for Culture of the Municipality of Juárez (IPACULT) and the civil association Ojo de Orozco, aimed to recall a pivotal episode of the Mexican Revolution.
The commemorative activity was held at the Rio Bravo embankment, specifically at the iconic rock known as Ojo de Orozco. This site is considered a symbolic historical witness to the revolutionary events that unfolded in May 1911.
Preserving Collective Memory and Historical Identity
During the event, emphasis was placed on the importance of preserving collective memory and strengthening the historical identity of the border community. Cultural activities such as this reenactment are crucial for connecting new generations with the events that shaped the nation’s trajectory.
In his address, Mayor Pérez Cuéllar highlighted that while Ciudad Juárez might not have played a leading role during Mexico’s Independence, it was fundamental during the Reform and the Mexican Revolution. This historical significance has earned the city national and international recognition.
The Mayor further stated that the Capture of Ciudad Juárez represented the beginning of the end of the dictatorship and a transition towards democracy, a path that has demanded great efforts from the Mexican people.
Art as a Bridge to History
Ogla Liset Olivas, acting head of IPACULT, expressed that this commemoration not only seeks to represent a historical event but also to reconnect with an episode that defined Mexico’s course. She underscored art’s capacity to engage citizens with history through emotion and consciousness, fostering an understanding of the social and cultural meaning of revolutionary movements.
The reenactment featured the participation of the Ninth Motorized Cavalry Regiment of the Mexican Army, the military band, and students from federal secondary schools 75, 17, and 18. Together, they brought to life this important historical episode through a theatrical performance that evoked the revolutionary events of 1911.
Distinguished Guests from Both Sides of the Border
The event was attended by various authorities from both Mexico and the United States. Notable attendees included Rafael Ortiz Orpinel, Secretary of the City Council; Mauricio Ibarra Ponce de León, Consul General of Mexico in El Paso, Texas; Robin Busse, Consul General of the United States in Ciudad Juárez; and Juan Acereto, representative of the Municipal Government in El Paso. Representatives from various sectors of the border community were also present.
