Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua – The Ciudad Juárez Cleaning Department is actively combating illegal dumping through its “The Weekly Pig” program, which publicly denounces individuals caught disposing of trash and construction debris in unauthorized areas. This initiative, supported by citizen reports, aims to improve the city’s urban image and address environmental and health concerns.

Recent Cases Highlight Ongoing Problem

Gibran Solís Kanahan, head of the Cleaning Department, reported a recent incident involving a Ford F-150 truck. Its occupants were observed unloading debris in a lot located between Manuel Gómez Morín Avenue and Francisco Villarreal Torres Boulevard. This site had only recently been cleaned as part of the “Juárez Amanece Limpio” (Juárez Wakes Up Clean) campaign. Solís Kanahan expressed frustration, stating, “It’s frustrating because a space is cleaned, and hours later, they come back to dirty it.”

The department has requested assistance from the General Coordination of Road Safety to identify the truck’s owner and issue the corresponding fine. Another case that garnered significant attention on social media involved several women discarding bags of trash in a vacant lot on Cristóbal Colón Street in the Centro neighborhood.

Environmental and Health Risks

Solís Kanahan emphasized that these actions not only harm the environment but also pose significant health and safety risks to residents. He reminded the public that Ciudad Juárez has had a regular trash collection service since September 2023, urging residents to report any collection delays rather than resorting to illegal dumping.

Citizen Participation is Key

The Cleaning Department continues to encourage citizens to send photographs, videos, and any data that can help identify those who contaminate the city. Reports can be made anonymously via WhatsApp to the numbers 656-301-4945 and 656-737-0198.

Solís Kanahan acknowledged the valuable participation of Juárez residents, highlighting that “The Weekly Pig” program has become an essential tool for exposing such behaviors and fostering a cleaner, more organized city.

The program underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining urban cleanliness and the importance of community involvement in addressing environmental issues. As Ciudad Juárez strives for a cleaner environment, the collaborative efforts between the Cleaning Department and its citizens remain crucial.
