Ciudad Juárez Government Highlights Progress in Women’s Protection Efforts
Ciudad Juárez, May 26 – The Municipal Government of Ciudad Juárez today unveiled the ‘Lo Hacemos por Todas’ report, an initiative focused on bolstering support, protection, and access to rights for women. This comprehensive strategy involves coordinated efforts between municipal departments and civil society organizations, aiming to promote substantive equality between women and men in the city.
The presentation, led by Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuéllar and coordinated by the Municipal Institute for Women (IMM), showcased significant achievements in preventing gender violence, providing integral care, strengthening institutional frameworks, and creating safe spaces for women and their families.
Mayor Emphasizes Commitment to Women’s Rights
Mayor Pérez Cuéllar underscored that a key accomplishment of his administration has been the sustained integration of women’s rights within the Municipal Development Plan. This commitment, he noted, has translated into concrete public policies, programs, and projects aimed at preventing violence and fostering substantive equality.
The Mayor also highlighted the importance of accountability across departments and acknowledged the invaluable support from civil organizations, stating that this coordination has been crucial in achieving positive outcomes for women in Juárez.
Expanded Shelters and Comprehensive Support
Among the notable advancements is the reinforcement of the Specialized Directorate for Family and Gender Violence within the Municipal Public Security Secretariat. This directorate has expanded its specialized areas to address perpetrators of violence and prevent new incidents.
Since 2023, the Municipal Center for Attention and Work with Men and Masculinities (CEMATH) has served 64,330 individuals. The police force reported attending to over 31,000 cases, distributing more than 2,000 protection devices to at-risk women, and providing 6,874 psychological support sessions.
The IMM announced the expansion of its fixed attention units to seven locations, delivering over 50,000 specialized services. Furthermore, the opening of the LIBRE Center for Women, in collaboration with the Secretariat of Women, provides a secure environment for victims of violence.
Additionally, three ‘Peace Spaces’ have been established in Riberas del Bravo, serving as temporary shelters. These are complemented by a Transition House, a Shelter for Women Victims of Violence, and the House of Peace for women and children.
Unprecedented Coordination with Civil Society
Yadira Cortés, representing the Women’s Network Table, praised the unprecedented coordination between authorities and civil society. She recognized the progress made in infrastructure, specialized care, and public policies implemented in recent years.
Mayor Pérez Cuéllar reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening funding for civil organizations and continuing projects such as the Museum of Women, alongside ongoing initiatives related to the Navajo Stream.
“Everyone knows what violence is. By combating gender violence, all types of violence are addressed,” stated Pérez Cuéllar.
The report underscores the Municipal Government’s dedication to creating a safer and more equitable environment for women in Ciudad Juárez, marking significant strides in a critical area of public welfare.
