Ciudad Juárez Intensifies Measles Vaccination Drive Amidst Rising Cases
Ciudad Juárez, March 29, 2026 – Health authorities in Ciudad Juárez have initiated an intensive five-day measles vaccination campaign, deploying brigades across various neighborhoods and shopping centers. The objective is to complete vaccination schedules and contain the recent surge in measles cases.
The Secretary of Health, in coordination with Health District II, the National Public Health Service, State Epidemiology, and the Undersecretariat for Disease Prevention and Control, is spearheading this comprehensive effort. Dr. Hugo Cobian, Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, urged citizens to review their vaccination records, emphasizing that the doses are free and safe, available at both mobile vaccination points and all health centers citywide.
Comprehensive Vaccination Beyond Measles
Saúl Dirvin Perea, the state head of the universal vaccination program, stated that in addition to the measles vaccine, the brigades will administer a full range of biologicals, including Hexavalent, Rotavirus, Pneumococcus, and Influenza, among others, to enhance population protection.
State epidemiologist Gumario Barrios reported that registered cases in the city have shown good evolution. While 21 deaths associated with measles, primarily due to pneumonia, were reported last year, no fatalities have been recorded in 2026 to date.
Targeted Outreach and Collaboration
Rogelio Covarrubias, director of Health District II, announced that the operation, following instructions from Health Secretary Gilberto Baeza, will run from Saturday to Wednesday, 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The goal is to administer over 40,000 measles doses, facilitated by a recent influx of vaccines to the state.
Forty vaccinators, organized into 10 brigades with five supervisors, have been dispatched from the Ambulatory Center for AIDS Prevention and Care (Capacits). These teams will target high-incidence neighborhoods such as Independencia II, Revolución Mexicana, San Felipe, División del Norte, Portal del Roble, Infonavit Casas Grandes, Riberas del Bravo, Villas de Alcalá, Melchor Ocampo, Barreal, Parajes de Oriente, Aeropuerto, Azteca, and La Cuesta.
Furthermore, brigades will be stationed this Saturday and Sunday at shopping centers including Plaza San Lorenzo, Mi Talamás, Las Américas, and Juárez Mall. This collaboration with the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) aims to provide accessible vaccination points for those unable to attend during weekdays.
Current Situation and Community Responsibility
Currently, Ciudad Juárez has recorded 26 new cases of measles, predominantly among young adults. However, the vaccination drive targets individuals from 6 to 11 months old and up to 49 years of age. Dr. Cobian underscored that vaccination is a community responsibility, as a lack of protection can impact the entire population. Special vaccination drives have also been conducted in maquiladoras where cases were detected, in coordination with the Social Security Institute.
This intensified vaccination effort reflects a proactive approach by health authorities to prevent a widespread measles outbreak and safeguard public health in Ciudad Juárez.
