CIUDAD JUÁREZ, CHIHUAHUA. – Ciudad Juárez is revitalizing its historical narrative with the official launch of the ‘Camino Real Tierra Adentro’ project. This innovative initiative aims to promote and educate the public about the rich history of the border city through the installation of interactive signage equipped with QR codes.
Interactive History at Your Fingertips
The project involves placing QR codes at various emblematic historical sites across Ciudad Juárez. When scanned, these codes will provide detailed information about the significance and history of each location, offering an engaging way for both residents and tourists to connect with the city’s past.
Regidor José Mauricio Padilla, coordinator of the Nomenclatura y Patrimonio Cultural Commission, announced that Mayor Cruz Pérez Cuellar has fully endorsed and supported the project. Tomás Cuevas, a distinguished professor from the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ), elaborated that the concept originated in 2023 and is now materializing in 2025.
Key Historical Sites Included in the First Phase
The initial phase of the ‘Camino Real Tierra Adentro’ project will see QR code installations at several historically significant points. These include:
- The Mission of San José
- The 1959 commemorative plaque on the Camino Real Tierra Adentro
- The Mission of Guadalupe de los Indios Mansos
- The Presidio de la Villa Paso del Norte
- The Plaza del Batallón de los Supremos Poderes
Additionally, other notable sites such as Ugarte y Mariscal, the Arena Kalaca, and the Casa de Adobe will also be integrated into this interactive historical tour.
Expected Impact and Future Plans
Installation of the interactive signage is anticipated to commence between January and February of the upcoming year. This rollout is expected to significantly enhance the historical understanding of these locations for both local residents and visiting tourists. The primary objective is to foster a deeper appreciation among citizens for the historical significance of these sites and the overall historical development of Ciudad Juárez.
This project follows a broader trend in Chihuahua to highlight its tourist attractions. Earlier this year, Chihuahua invited visitors to explore its diverse offerings during the December holiday season, signaling a concerted effort to boost regional tourism.
Community Engagement and Educational Outreach
The ‘Camino Real Tierra Adentro’ project is not merely about preserving history but also about making it accessible and engaging. By leveraging modern technology, Ciudad Juárez aims to create an immersive educational experience that will inform and inspire. The collaboration between municipal authorities and academic institutions underscores a commitment to cultural heritage and community development.
This initiative is part of a larger vision to position Ciudad Juárez as a destination rich in history and culture, inviting people to explore its unique heritage interactively. The project is expected to contribute to local tourism and foster a stronger sense of identity among its inhabitants by highlighting their shared past.
