Daily Influx of 150 Migrants in Ciudad Juarez
Ciudad Juarez, Mexico – March 1, 2026 – An average of 150 migrants are arriving daily in Ciudad Juarez, seeking international protection in Mexico. This ongoing migration crisis, which began in October, has seen a substantial increase in asylum requests, primarily from Cuban nationals.
Official documents from Coespo indicate that as of last Friday, 14,602 migrants had formally requested international protection in Mexico. Out of this number, 4,653 are currently in transit within Juarez, housed in various shelters and hotels.
Cuban Nationals Lead Asylum Requests
The number of Cuban nationals seeking protection in Juarez has surged recently. On May 15, 61 registrations were recorded, followed by 120 on May 16, and 128 on May 17. Following Cubans, significant numbers of asylum seekers originate from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.
Coespo also reported that 757 individuals are being sheltered within the Red de Albergues (Shelter Network) established in Juarez to manage the crisis.
Repatriation Efforts and Support Services
This month alone, 1,041 Mexican nationals have been repatriated through the “Libertad” Human Repatriation point at the Santa Fe-Paso del Norte International Bridge. The total number of repatriations from January to May stands at 7,822 individuals returned to their places of residence.
To address the growing needs, the state government inaugurated the Centro de Atención a Migrantes (Migrant Attention Center) in Juarez. This comprehensive project aims to streamline the reception and care of migrants by offering basic services without requiring multiple transfers between different agencies. The center provides psychosocial support, facilitates contact with family members via phone and social media, offers guidance on money transfers and deposits, and provides coffee service.
Additionally, the Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (Secretariat of Social Development) will allocate a fund of 3 million pesos to be distributed among civil society organizations that support migrants.
Long Waits for US Asylum Processing
As of last Friday, 4,653 individuals were in transit through Ciudad Juarez, awaiting the processing of their asylum applications in the United States. The estimated waiting time for the latest registered applicants is approximately 90 days.
Currently, 2,543 migrants are awaiting the resolution of their asylum applications to the United States under the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). Of these, 56% are men, 44% are women, and 27% are unaccompanied minors. There are also 570 family units. The National Institute of Migration (INM) reports the following nationality breakdown: 47% from Guatemala, 35% from Honduras, and 19% from El Salvador.
The Centro de Atención a Migrantes also offers assistance with obtaining transportation vouchers, transfers to the bus terminal, legal migration advice, affiliation and renewal of Seguro Popular (Popular Insurance) policies, and the acquisition of birth certificates, CURP (Unique Population Registry Code), and voter IDs.
