Shelters in Ciudad Juarez Call for Consular Assistance for Venezuelan Migrants

Ciudad Juarez, Mexico – July 2, 2026 – The Red de Albergues Somos Uno por Juárez (Shelter Network We Are One for Juarez) has issued a plea for consular assistance for Venezuelan migrants housed in local shelters. The network reports that approximately 150 Venezuelan migrants are currently receiving basic support in these facilities, but their vulnerability is significantly heightened by the absence of proper consular representation at the border.

The issue underscores a critical gap in support for a specific migrant population facing unique challenges. While shelters provide essential services such as food, shelter, and medical care, the lack of consular access can impede crucial processes like legal aid, documentation, and communication with their home country.

Increased Vulnerability Due to Lack of Representation

Paola Romo, a representative from the Red de Albergues Somos Uno por Juárez, highlighted the particular difficulties faced by Venezuelan nationals. “The absence of consular representation means these migrants often lack the necessary official support to navigate their situation effectively,” Romo stated. “This can lead to prolonged stays in shelters, difficulties in processing asylum claims, and an overall increased risk of exploitation.”

The network emphasized that while general support is provided to all migrants, the Venezuelan population requires specialized attention due to this diplomatic void. Without a direct line to their government, many struggle to obtain identification documents, address legal concerns, or even connect with family members back home.

Ongoing Migratory Challenges in Ciudad Juarez

Ciudad Juarez continues to be a critical point in the migratory route, attracting individuals from various countries seeking to cross into the United States. The city’s shelters play a vital role in providing humanitarian aid to thousands of migrants annually. However, the specific needs of certain groups, such as the Venezuelan community, often require additional resources and advocacy.

The call for consular assistance is not only about immediate needs but also about ensuring the long-term well-being and legal protection of these individuals. Effective consular support can streamline processes, offer legal guidance, and ultimately contribute to more humane and orderly migration experiences.

Local authorities and non-governmental organizations are working to address the broader challenges faced by migrants in the region. Recent reports indicate that the city has been actively managing various aspects of migration, including providing health services and addressing housing needs. However, the specific issue of consular representation for Venezuelan migrants remains a pressing concern that requires international attention and collaboration.

The Red de Albergues Somos Uno por Juárez hopes that their appeal will prompt a response from relevant international bodies and diplomatic missions to establish a mechanism for supporting Venezuelan nationals in Ciudad Juarez. This would not only alleviate the burden on local shelters but also uphold the rights and dignity of vulnerable migrants.
