Ciudad Juarez, May 14 – The Ciudad Juarez Cabildo has approved a resolution urging the State Government to take action to improve accessibility and mobility conditions in public transport. The initiative focuses specifically on addressing the needs of senior citizens and people with disabilities.
Cabildo Approves Resolution for Inclusive Mobility
The proposal was presented by councilwoman Martha Patricia Mendoza Rodríguez, who emphasized the need to strengthen access conditions within transport units and ensure a service that includes a gender perspective and priority attention for women, girls, and adolescents.
During the session, Mendoza Rodríguez highlighted the daily obstacles faced by many individuals using public transport due to a lack of adequate infrastructure and insufficient support from some operators. This is particularly challenging for those who rely on wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility devices.
Mendoza Rodríguez warned that these conditions limit people’s right to move safely and with dignity within the city, making it necessary to expand accessibility measures in the units currently providing service.
Beyond Juárez Bus: System-Wide Accessibility Needed
Councilman José Eduardo Valenzuela Martínez added that improvements should not be limited to the Juárez Bus system but must extend to the entire public transport network. He cited existing deficiencies in infrastructure and access mechanisms for users with limited mobility across the board.
In the same session, the City Council also approved institutionalizing May 29 as the Municipal Day of Multiple Sclerosis. This initiative aims to promote information, awareness, and visibility of the disease.
Advocacy for a More Inclusive Transport System
The resolution from the Ciudad Juarez Cabildo underscores a growing demand for more inclusive urban environments. By highlighting the challenges faced by vulnerable populations, the city aims to prompt concrete changes that will allow all residents to navigate their daily lives with greater ease and independence.
The call for improved accessibility is a critical step towards fostering a more equitable and functional public transport system, ensuring that mobility is a right accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability.
This move by Ciudad Juarez aligns with broader discussions in Latin America regarding the need for structural changes in mobility, as highlighted in recent regional forums and expert opinions. The focus on accessibility reflects a shift towards prioritizing user experience and social equity in urban planning.
The city now awaits the State Government’s response and the implementation of measures that will transform public transport into a truly accessible service for all its citizens.
