Ciudad Juárez Recognized for Sustainable Development
Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico – March 16, 2026 – Ciudad Juárez has achieved first place in the National Municipal Good Governance Award 2025 in the thematic category of Sustainable Cities. This prestigious recognition highlights the city’s innovative strategies outlined in its Municipal Development Plan 2024-2027, particularly the “Resilient and Sustainable Juárez” axis.
Emilio Flores, General Director of Planning and Evaluation, announced that the award was presented last Friday at the National Public Administration Venue. The recognition specifically lauded the transversal axis “Resilient and Sustainable Juárez: Adaptation and Response for a Safe Future,” which is a core component of the Municipal Development Plan.
A Model of Preventive Governance
Flores explained that this axis proposes a public management model focused on strengthening the city’s capacity to anticipate, resist, adapt, and transform in the face of social, urban, environmental, and economic crises. This is achieved through preventive, coordinated, and people-centered governance.
The official further indicated that this strategy has aligned municipal programs with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. This alignment drives projects that prioritize the well-being of the population and environmental protection.
Flores emphasized that the initiative benefits from the support of international organizations like UN-Habitat. This collaboration has facilitated the development of strategic instruments such as the Ciudad Juárez 2040 Vision, designed to prepare the city for present and future challenges.
Collaborative Efforts for a Sustainable Future
Yesenia Arlet Hidalgo González, Resilience Coordinator, noted that the transversal axis integrates 166 specific actions involving 37 municipal departments. These departments work in a coordinated manner to promote public policies that directly impact the city.
Municipal President Cruz Pérez Cuéllar acknowledged the diligent work of the involved departments and expressed gratitude for their commitment to the transversal axis, which ultimately led to this national recognition for Ciudad Juárez.
