Mexico City Issues Cold Weather Alerts for Sunday, January 11th

Mexico City, January 11 – The Mexico City Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) has activated orange and yellow alerts for low temperatures expected during the early hours of this Sunday, January 11th. This comes as a cold air mass brings winter conditions to several boroughs across the capital.

According to the agency, the coldest temperatures are anticipated between 02:00 and 08:00 hours. The public is urged to take extreme precautions, particularly in the city’s high-altitude and rural areas.

Orange Alert in Three Boroughs for Intense Cold

An orange alert has been issued for the boroughs of Magdalena Contreras, Milpa Alta, and Tlalpan. These areas are expected to experience temperatures between 1 and 3 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of frost during the early morning hours. These boroughs are characterized by mountainous terrain and higher altitudes, increasing the risk for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Yellow Alert in Four Boroughs

In addition, a yellow alert has been activated for the boroughs of Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Tláhuac, and Xochimilco. Temperatures in these areas are forecast to range between 4 and 6 degrees Celsius during the same period. Although the temperature drop will be less severe, authorities warn that the cold can still lead to health issues, primarily respiratory illnesses, if preventive measures are not taken.

Recommendations for Temperature Drops

In response to these conditions, Civil Protection has issued several recommendations:

  • Dress in at least three layers of clothing, preferably cotton or wool.
  • Protect your nose and mouth.
  • Hydrate your skin with cream.
  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Consume fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C.
  • Keep your vaccination schedule up to date.
  • Exercise extreme caution when using heaters or fireplaces, ensuring adequate ventilation to prevent intoxication.

Should any discomfort arise, residents are advised to visit the nearest health center and to wash their hands frequently or use antibacterial gel.

Emergency Contact Numbers and Official Channels

For any emergencies, the public can contact 911, Locatel at 55 5658 1111, or the SGIRPC at 55 5683 2222. Authorities urge residents to stay informed through Civil Protection’s official social media accounts and website, as cold conditions may persist in the coming days.
