Mexico City, March 26 – The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) of Mexico City has activated yellow and orange cold weather alerts for six boroughs in the capital, effective until 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 26. This comes as the city experiences a significant temperature contrast, with frigid mornings in some areas and warmer afternoons.
Cold Front Grips Southern and Western Boroughs
The yellow alert applies to the boroughs of Cuajimalpa, La Magdalena Contreras, Álvaro Obregón, Xochimilco, and Milpa Alta, where minimum temperatures are forecast to range between 4 and 6°C. An orange alert has been issued for Tlalpan, where temperatures could plummet to between 1 and 3°C. Elevated areas within these southern and western boroughs are expected to experience even colder conditions, with temperatures potentially falling below 1°C.
Despite the morning chill, the central areas of Mexico City are anticipated to reach a maximum temperature of around 26°C later in the day. This significant temperature swing necessitates dressing in layers to adapt to the changing conditions throughout the day. Residents, particularly children and the elderly, are advised to take precautions against these temperature fluctuations.
Windy Conditions and Fog Expected
In addition to the cold, wind gusts are expected to remain between 35 and 45 kilometers per hour during the afternoon of Thursday, March 26. These wind speeds are not anticipated to cause negative impacts such as falling objects. However, between Thursday night and early Friday morning, winds are expected to subside.
Visibility will generally be good across most of Mexico City, exceeding 40 kilometers. An exception is the northern part of the city, specifically the Gustavo Madero borough, where fog banks are predicted in the early hours of Thursday, reducing visibility to less than 4 kilometers.
Broader Temperature Overview Across the City
Beyond the alert zones, other boroughs will also experience cooler temperatures. Tláhuac, Coyoacán, Benito Juárez, and Miguel Hidalgo will see minimums between 6 and 8°C. The remaining boroughs will experience temperatures ranging from 8 to 10°C. In the border area between Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, Venustiano Carranza, and Cuauhtémoc, temperatures will be above 10°C.
After the cold start, maximum temperatures will rebound to between 24 and 26°C in boroughs such as Venustiano Carranza, Gustavo Madera, Azcapotzalco, Cuauhtémoc, Coyoacán, Benito Juárez, Iztacalco, and Iztapalapa. The rest of the city will see highs between 22 and 24°C, with the exception of the elevated southern and western areas where temperatures will remain below 21°C.
The SGIRPC and Meteored advise residents to stay informed about weather updates through their mobile applications and websites. Activating notifications for weather alerts is also recommended, as forecasts are updated throughout the week.
Recent reports have indicated a week with varied weather conditions for Mexico City, including rain, warm afternoons, and wind gusts exceeding 50 km/h. This latest cold alert underscores the importance of being prepared for diverse meteorological phenomena in the capital.
