College of Planners and Urbanists Established in Ciudad Juárez to Address Urban Challenges
Ciudad Juárez, September 26 – With the objective of contributing a perspective on the development of housing with accessibility to transportation, schools, and hospitals, the College of Planners and Urbanists of the State of Chihuahua, A.C. (Coplanur) was formed in Ciudad Juárez. The organization celebrated the inauguration of its first board of directors and founding members, with Dr. Alma Angélica Rodríguez Moreno as president, who spoke about the group’s professional goals.
“Public interest must prevail in decisions about the city,” she stated. The capacity of Ciudad Juárez to generate employment and economic activity must also translate into better living conditions for its inhabitants. To achieve this, she affirmed that it is necessary to have dignified public spaces, safe commutes, and equitable access to services and opportunities, regardless of where each person lives.
Addressing Key Urban Challenges
In its presentation to the community, Coplanur highlighted existing challenges, including pressure on water and land, territorial inequalities, and difficulties in bringing infrastructure and services to growing areas. Rodríguez Moreno emphasized the need to think long-term and anticipate the consequences of decisions that are transforming cities today.
She expressed that the College seeks to be a meeting point that generates knowledge, promotes dialogue, and contributes to building solutions together with institutions, universities, productive sectors, and citizens. Dr. Marisol Rodríguez Sosa, coordinator of the Master’s in Urban Planning and Development at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, was present at the ceremony. She noted that the program has more than 120 graduates and recognized the importance of the College’s formation for the development of this professional field.
Formal Inauguration and Future Vision
Jaime Raygoza, a representative of the State Directorate of Professions, led the formal act and swore in the first Board of Directors and founding members. Representatives from the municipal government and the state government were also present. The president of Coplanur maintained that the city is a common good and called for dialogue among the different sectors of the community to build a shared vision for the future of the cities of Chihuahua.
The establishment of Coplanur marks a significant step towards a more integrated and sustainable urban development strategy for Ciudad Juárez, aiming to ensure that economic growth translates into tangible improvements in the quality of life for all its residents.
