Control Festival 2026 Arrives in Ciudad Juárez, Setting an International Precedent
Ciudad Juárez, April 19, 2026 – The Control Festival 2026 is poised to make history as it brings its unique blend of music, art, and freestyle to Ciudad Juárez, marking the first time this international event is held outside a global capital. Scheduled from April 22 to 26, the festival will feature FMS International and FMS Caribe competitions, alongside a vibrant display of urban art and live music from over 15 bands.
A Collective Effort to Elevate Ciudad Juárez
Leonel del Portillo, known as Pilo, the festival organizer, graphic artist, and director of FMS in Mexico, emphasized the unprecedented nature of this event. “This is the first time this event has left a world capital. It has been in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and now we have it in Ciudad Juárez,” Pilo stated. This initiative positions Ciudad Juárez as a new focal point within the global freestyle scene.
The project is a collaborative effort involving Urban Roosters, creators of FMS; Escena Capital, as the Mexican producer; and significant support from the Municipal Government, the Municipal Youth Institute, Technology Hub, and various sponsors like Modernas Pinturas. “We are bringing this event together with many partners. There is support from the Municipal Government, organizations, and the local scene. It is a joint effort to bring all these activities to Juárez,” Pilo explained.
Transforming Spaces: Art and Culture Take Over
For five days, the former La Playa hotel, a disused space, will be transformed into a temporary cultural center by graphic artists, collectives, and designers. The venue, located opposite Technology Hub and La Equis, will host art installations, murals, interventions, and live performances.
Visual artists participating include Luisafa from Chihuahua, local creators like Damasco and Rifa, and collectives such as Morras en Control, a group of female graffiti artists. Tino Ortega, an artist from El Paso, will also contribute. The musical lineup boasts over 15 bands and projects spanning genres from rock, indie, punk, and pop, to DJ sets and experimental proposals.
Inclusive and Family-Friendly Environment
Beyond its artistic scope, the festival aims to be an inclusive event open to all audiences. “We are inviting everyone. We hope it will be a family-friendly environment, where families come to explore the space,” Pilo noted. The festival’s schedule is as follows:
- April 22 & 23: Activities begin at 5:00 PM
- April 24: Activities start at 10:00 AM, including the FMS qualifying tournament
- April 25: Festival operates until 2:00 PM; FMS International main event starts at 6:00 PM
- April 26: Closing day, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM
The FMS International competition is expected to draw thousands of attendees, and for those unable to attend in person, the event will be live-streamed on digital platforms.
Ciudad Juárez: A Growing Freestyle Hub
Pilo highlighted the crucial role of the local scene’s growth in Ciudad Juárez being chosen as a host city. He mentioned local talents like freestyler Chaves (Chávez) and DJ Biche, both from the city and active in international circuits. “It’s a discipline that is very popular in Ciudad Juárez. There are many practitioners, they meet in spaces like Borunda Park, and there is a very active scene,” he explained.
He further stressed that the movement has transcended social sectors. “It is now universal, with people from all areas and strata. It is a discipline that generates a lot of passion,” he added. Pilo likened freestyle to wrestling for its intensity and dynamism: “It’s two rappers facing each other, but with words.” Notably, the festival will not sell alcohol, focusing instead on its artistic and cultural content.
A New Epicenter for Urban Culture
The realization of Control Festival in Ciudad Juárez not only sets a precedent by decentralizing an international event of this magnitude but also firmly establishes the border city as a new epicenter for urban culture, independent art, and freestyle on a global scale.
