COPRED Celebrates 15 Years of Fighting Discrimination in Mexico City
Mexico City, February 24, 2026 – The Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City (COPRED) commemorated its 15th anniversary on February 24, 2026, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to combat discrimination and promote equality within the capital.
A Decade and a Half of Impactful Public Policy
During the anniversary ceremony held at the Museum of Mexico City, COPRED President Geraldina González de la Vega emphasized the consolidation of high-impact public policies aimed at ensuring labor opportunities for men and women with disabilities, fostering respect for sexual diversity, and recognizing the identity and autonomy of indigenous peoples, among other crucial initiatives.
González de la Vega reported that over its 15-year history, COPRED has attended to approximately 22,000 individuals and opened 2,500 case files. The primary issues addressed in these cases have been related to pregnancy, health conditions, and disability, underscoring the systemic nature of discrimination in these areas.
Challenges Amidst Hate Speech and Limited Resources
The COPRED President acknowledged the increasing difficulty of sustaining the institution in an era marked by hate speech and division. She highlighted the significant challenges faced by COPRED, which operates with a dedicated team of only 60 staff members and an annual budget of 30 million pesos (approximately 1.7 million USD).
“Discrimination remains a structural reality that manifests in new forms and demands increasingly specialized institutional responses,” González de la Vega stated, underscoring the evolving nature of the fight for equality.
Strengthening a Culture of Respect
Addressing an audience that included representatives from the LGBTQ+ community and individuals with disabilities, the official stressed that the ongoing challenge is to continue strengthening a culture of respect and to eliminate prejudices. This commitment aims to ensure that diversity remains one of Mexico City’s greatest assets.
