CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Chihuahua – Cruz Pérez Cuéllar, the licensed mayor of Ciudad Juárez and an aspiring candidate for the governorship of Chihuahua, has publicly accused the state’s PAN governor, María Eugenia Campos Galván, of being a “traitor to the homeland.” Pérez Cuéllar’s strong condemnation stems from what he describes as Governor Campos’s desire for the failure of the Treaty Between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC).

Pérez Cuéllar Rebuts Campos’s T-MEC Claims

In a video widely circulated on his social media platforms, Pérez Cuéllar directly addressed Governor Campos, stating, “Governor, stop lying; the Free Trade Agreement will remain in force until 2036, and the only thing agreed upon is that there will be an annual review; this is good news because those like you who bet on Mexico’s failure, today we know that the treaty remains in force.” He emphasized that the agreement is beneficial for the economies of Chihuahua and Mexico, despite what he termed as the opposition from “conservatives and traitors to the homeland” like Governor Campos.

Accusations of Betrayal and Support for Claudia Sheinbaum

Pérez Cuéllar further asserted that the T-MEC is a positive development for the country, even if it displeases those he considers “conservatives and traitors to the homeland.” His comments also included a supportive remark for President Claudia Sheinbaum, aligning his stance with the national government’s perspective on the trade agreement.

Chihuahuans Demand an End to Abandonment, Says Pérez Cuéllar

Beyond the T-MEC controversy, Pérez Cuéllar highlighted the primary demands of Chihuahua residents during his campaign tours across various municipalities. He stated that the most frequent complaint from citizens is the perceived abandonment by the current PAN state government.

Call for Government Presence and Support

“We have an absent state government, which is not in the territory and is not in the municipalities. People want to be heard and attended to, not forgotten,” Pérez Cuéllar declared. He underscored that in every community he visits, citizens repeatedly ask for governmental support in areas such as infrastructure, education, and security, emphasizing the need for these resources to reach all municipalities without distinction.

Criticism of Governor Campos’s Engagement with Municipalities

Ahead of the upcoming survey to determine the next State Coordinator of the Defense of the Fourth Transformation, Pérez Cuéllar criticized Governor Campos for her alleged infrequent or non-existent visits to several municipalities she claims to govern. He deemed this unacceptable given the numerous deficiencies and unresolved problems across the state.

Commitment to Listening to Citizens

Pérez Cuéllar reiterated his commitment to continue touring the state, listening directly to the needs of the population, and building a project that is closely aligned with the citizenry. His ultimate goal, he stated, is to promote the development of all regions within Chihuahua.

Context of the T-MEC Discussion

The T-MEC, which replaced NAFTA, is a crucial trade agreement that governs economic relations between Mexico, the United States, and Canada. Its continued validity and annual review process are significant for the economic stability and growth of the participating nations, particularly for border states like Chihuahua, which heavily rely on cross-border trade and manufacturing.

This political exchange comes at a critical time as Mexico prepares for upcoming elections, with various political figures vying for key positions and attempting to garner public support by addressing pressing economic and social issues.
