Dollar Holds Above 18 Pesos in Ciudad Juárez Exchange Houses

Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico – March 12, 2026 – The exchange rate of the Mexican peso against the US dollar continues to hover above 18 pesos in Ciudad Juárez exchange houses. This trend is particularly noticeable in establishments located near international bridges, areas that experience high demand for foreign currency due to the constant flow of individuals engaged in commercial, labor, and tourism activities between Mexico and the United States.

According to a survey conducted by El Heraldo de Juárez across various exchange establishments, the selling price of the dollar currently stands at 18.10 pesos, while the buying price is approximately 17.10 pesos.

Interbank vs. Exchange House Rates: A Divergence

In contrast to the exchange house rates, the interbank dollar exhibits a different behavior. In some banking institutions within the city, the average buying price is around 18.70 pesos. This disparity highlights the differences between the banking market and the exchange house market, where factors such as operational costs and immediate liquidity can influence pricing.

Recent Trends and Influencing Factors

Marcelo Vázquez Tovar, the regional representative of the National Association of Importers and Exporters of the Mexican Republic (Anierm), explained that the dollar has shown a tendency to lose ground against the Mexican peso during the current year. However, this trend has been recently challenged.

Vázquez Tovar pointed out that international factors, including ongoing military conflicts and market uncertainties, have begun to exert renewed pressure on the dollar’s price. These global events are contributing to the recent appreciation of the dollar, pushing its quotation back towards and above the 18-peso mark in recent days.

Historical Context of the Dollar’s Performance

According to sector representatives, the US currency had dropped to as low as 17.15 pesos during February, recording a monthly average of 17.23 pesos. This represented a significant decrease compared to January, when the dollar had averaged around 17.65 pesos. The current upward movement therefore marks a shift from the more favorable exchange rates observed earlier in the year.

The sustained demand for dollars in Ciudad Juárez, driven by its unique cross-border dynamics, coupled with external economic and geopolitical pressures, continues to shape the local foreign exchange market. Observers will be monitoring these factors closely to anticipate future movements in the dollar-peso exchange rate.
