Drug Bust on Ahumada-Ciudad Juarez Highway: Over 50 kg Seized from Passenger Bus
Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, May 20, 2026 – Mexican authorities have seized more than 50 kilograms of illicit drugs, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, from a passenger bus traveling on the Ahumada-Ciudad Juarez highway. The bus, operated by the company Chihuahuenses, was en route to Ciudad Juarez from Culiacán, Sinaloa, when it was intercepted by the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
The operation, which took place on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 19, involved the interception of a 2021 model bus, economic number 9561, on Federal Highway 45, specifically at kilometer 302 of the Villa Ahumada-Juarez stretch.
Significant Drug Haul Discovered During Inspection
During a preventive inspection of the vehicle, agents discovered a substantial quantity of narcotics. The search yielded 40 packages wrapped in clear plastic and black tape, containing a powder consistent with fentanyl, weighing approximately 40 kilograms. Additionally, authorities found nine containers holding 13 plastic packages of a crystalline substance resembling methamphetamine, with an approximate weight of 14 kilograms.
Further inspection uncovered two more containers, inside which approximately 20,000 blue pills, also believed to be fentanyl, were located. This discovery highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat drug trafficking routes within Mexico.
Bus Driver Detained, Investigation Underway
The driver of the bus, identified only as Juan N., was immediately taken into custody at the scene. He will be handed over to the relevant authorities to determine his legal status and involvement in the drug trafficking operation. The FGR is expected to provide more information regarding the seizure and the ongoing investigation in the coming hours.
Third Incident Involving the Same Bus Company
Notably, this incident marks the third occasion in the past six months that a bus from the same company, Chihuahuenses, has been reportedly intercepted while transporting drugs towards the border city of Ciudad Juarez. This pattern raises concerns about potential organized criminal activities utilizing public transportation for illicit purposes.
Authorities are expected to broaden their investigation to determine if there are systemic issues or complicity within the transportation company that facilitate such large-scale drug movements. The repeated nature of these seizures underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement in controlling drug flows originating from regions like Sinaloa and destined for border areas.
The seizure represents a significant blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the region, preventing a substantial amount of illicit substances from reaching their intended markets. This operation is part of a broader strategy by Mexican authorities to increase surveillance and enforcement along key transportation corridors used by criminal organizations.
Additional details regarding the investigation, including potential links to larger criminal groups and the final disposition of the seized drugs, are anticipated as the case progresses. The Attorney General’s Office remains committed to disrupting drug supply chains and bringing those responsible to justice.
