Mexico City, August 9, 2026 – The Ecobici service in Mexico City is set for a significant expansion, reaching new areas of the capital and offering an individual ecological transport option. This development follows the publication of a public tender in the Official Gazette of Mexico City for the comprehensive service of the system, which will grow from operating in six to nine boroughs.
Semovi Launches Tender for Ecobici Expansion
The call from the Ministry of Mobility of Mexico City (Semovi) indicates that the service could commence in 2026 and will run until July 31, 2036. The expansion will include the boroughs of Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, and Tlalpan for the first time.
The tender corresponds to International Public Tender 30001062-001-2026 and Call CONV-009-2026, both published on August 7 in the CDMX Gazette. This expansion comes after the system did not grow during the 2026 World Cup as announced in June 2025 by the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, who stated that Ecobici would expand to 15,000 bicycles by 2026.
New Boroughs to Benefit from Ecobici
According to the tender description, the comprehensive service of the Individual Public Bicycle Transport System of Mexico City will operate in nine boroughs. These include Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuauhtémoc, Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, Miguel Hidalgo, and Tlalpan.
The tender specifies that Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, and Tlalpan currently lack Ecobici service. Therefore, they will be the first boroughs to receive the expanded system. The procedure includes preliminary work, transition, bicycle implementation, cycle station implementation, as well as operation and maintenance of the network that will be operating in the capital’s streets.
Regarding the start of Ecobici service in the new boroughs, the tender states: “Date on which the service will be provided, from the day following the award date until July 31, 2036.”
Tender Details and Schedule
The bidding terms have a cost of 100,000 Mexican pesos and are available on the Semovi website and at their offices at Álvaro Obregón number 269, 5th floor, Roma neighborhood. August 9 is the deadline to acquire them. The presentation and opening of proposals will take place on August 14 at 11:00 AM, and the decision will be announced on August 17 at 11:00 AM, both at Semovi’s headquarters on the 1st floor. Details of the works and the installation of Ecobici stations will be known from this date.
The tender does not specify how many bicycles the expanded service will have, nor does it establish the definitive number of new cycle stations to be installed in each borough. Furthermore, it does not set a specific date for all new stations to be installed. The document does state that the service area will cover nine boroughs of the capital.

Ecobici’s Current Operations and World Cup 2026 Plans
Ecobici implemented 3,000 bicycles and established new routes as part of a special operation for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico City, aiming to facilitate fan mobility to the Estadio Ciudad de México. The plan included five cycle stations around the venue, strategically located for their connection to the Metro, Light Rail, and the Taxqueña Modal Transfer Center.
Currently, the system operates with more than 9,300 bicycles and 687 cycle stations in six boroughs. The service records approximately 52,000 daily trips and around 186,000 active users.
