Ciudad Juarez, April 20, 2026 – Central Park in Ciudad Juarez has become a crucial sanctuary for endangered bird species, with recent births of Mexican Ducks and Canadian Geese. These events underscore the park’s significance as a unique reproduction site in Mexico and highlight its role in biodiversity conservation.
Endangered Species Find Refuge in the Heart of Juarez
The Mexican Duck and the Canadian Goose are both protected under Official Mexican Standard 059 of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), which classifies them as threatened species. These birds face the risk of extinction, yet Central Park provides a permanent and temporary habitat where they are successfully reproducing.
Rafael Butchart Sánchez, coordinator of Central Park, emphasized the importance of these births as an indicator of the park’s healthy environmental conditions. “The birth of species like the Mexican Duck, which are in danger of extinction and under federal care regulations, in the heart of Juarez residents, makes us very happy,” Butchart stated.
Canadian Geese Nest Exclusively in Central Park
Butchart further noted that Canadian Geese have also been born in the park, a species that exclusively nests at this location in all of Mexico. This unique characteristic makes maintaining the park’s optimal conditions for both visitors and wildlife indispensable.
Isaac Miramontes, Head of Flora and Fauna for Ciudad Juarez, echoed these sentiments, describing Central Park as an increasingly vital oasis for biodiversity, particularly for these at-risk species. He explained that the conservation of these species is fundamental for ecological balance, and efforts are underway to ensure their protection.
Flora and Fauna Initiatives Enhance Biodiversity
Miramontes also highlighted that the benefits extend beyond fauna, as the park’s flora has also seen improvements. The vegetation palette has been adapted with native species suited to Ciudad Juarez’s climate, further enhancing the park’s ecological value.
These successful reproductions at Central Park serve as a testament to the ongoing conservation efforts and the park’s critical role in safeguarding endangered species within an urban environment. The park continues to be a beacon of hope for biodiversity in the region, providing a safe haven for vulnerable wildlife.
