Flooding Devastates Ciudad Juárez: 400 Neighborhoods Affected by ‘El Niño’
CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Chihuahua, Mexico – September 24, 2026 – The Secretariat of Human Development and Common Welfare, through Undersecretary Austria Galindo, has reported widespread flooding across Ciudad Juárez, impacting approximately 400 neighborhoods due to the ‘El Niño’ weather phenomenon. This assessment was conducted in coordination with Civil Protection authorities.
Galindo detailed that out of the 400 affected areas, 48 neighborhoods are experiencing the most significant damage, primarily characterized by homes with leaky roofs. In response, an inter-institutional intervention is being planned to provide waterproofing materials to the affected families.
Emergency Aid and Material Distribution Underway
Currently, an inventory of available materials is being compiled to determine the scope of the distribution effort. In the interim, 700 food pantries from the Nutri Chihuahua program are being distributed. These provisions will be replenished in October for families who regularly receive this support.
Among the neighborhoods identified with the most severe damage are Riberas del Bravo, El Sauzal, Las Haciendas, La Chaveña, El Roble, Mariano Escobedo, Melchor Ocampo, Siglo XXI, Villa Hermosa, Anáhuac, Eco 2000, Lázaro Cárdenas, Morelos, Misión del Real, Lucio Blanco, Lucio Cabañas, Campestre Virreyes, Revolución Mexicana, Emiliano Zapata, Partido Romero, Guadalajara Izquierda, Anapra, Águilas de Zaragoza, Aztecas, Bosques de Aragón, Loma Blanca, Fronteriza, Valle Verde, Felipe Ángeles, Parajes del Sur, Lote Bravo, Los Locales, Pradera Dorada, Fronteriza Baja, and Villa Residencial.
Continued Monitoring and Response
This widespread flooding underscores the significant impact of the ‘El Niño’ phenomenon on the region. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and coordinate efforts to mitigate further damage and provide essential aid to residents. The municipal Civil Protection agency maintains an alert regarding the forecast for rain throughout the week, indicating that ongoing vigilance and preparedness are crucial.
In related news, the Municipal Water and Sanitation Board (JMAS) has been actively addressing reports stemming from the intense rainfall across various parts of the city. They are maintaining an operational response to address the impacts of the rains, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the city’s infrastructure.
It was also reported that 13 schools in Ciudad Juárez have been affected by the rains, further illustrating the broad impact of the weather event on the community’s infrastructure and daily life.
