Ciudad Juarez, February 12 – Officials from the U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez placed a floral wreath at the Abraham Lincoln Monument in Ciudad Juarez on Thursday, February 12, in observance of Presidents’ Day, to be celebrated in the United States on February 16.

Symbolic Act Highlights International Diplomacy

In an official statement, the diplomatic mission announced that consulates and cultural organizations worldwide are participating in the fifth annual celebration. The initiative involves placing floral wreaths at statues of U.S. presidents located abroad to honor their history globally and emphasize the importance of international diplomacy and leadership these commemorative monuments represent.

During the ceremony, held at the statue on Abraham Lincoln Avenue, the Acting U.S. Consul General in Ciudad Juarez, Robin Busse, emphasized that it was “a symbolic act of honor, remembrance, and respect.”

Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, added that these ceremonies demonstrate the cultural and personal ties U.S. presidents have established with other countries. “It is an honor to commemorate this shared history through annual events with a growing network of participating countries, especially in a year when the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary,” McLaurin commented.

A Tradition Expanding Globally

According to the document sent by the consulate’s press office, the tradition began in 2022 when the association collaborated with the U.S. Consulate in Edinburgh, the Scottish Government, and the city of Edinburgh. On that occasion, a floral wreath was placed at Lincoln’s statue in that city, honoring Scots who fought for the Union during the American Civil War.

Since then, the floral wreath tradition has expanded to include more than 20 countries worldwide, underscoring the enduring legacy of U.S. presidents and the diplomatic relationships fostered through such gestures.

Community Support for the Monument

Days before Thursday’s ceremony, a crew of consulate employees, with the support of the Ciudad Juarez municipality, carried out cleaning work in the area. The Parks and Gardens Department also conducted renovation work around the monument, located in the traffic circle at the entrance to the Carlos Villarreal bridge, ensuring the site was pristine for the commemorative event.

The annual event serves as a reminder of the historical connections and shared values between the United States and other nations, promoting a deeper understanding of diplomatic relations and the leadership embodied by figures like Abraham Lincoln.

The celebration of Presidents’ Day through these international ceremonies reinforces the message of global cooperation and mutual respect, highlighting the historical impact of U.S. leadership on a worldwide scale.

The U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Juarez continues to engage in various cultural and diplomatic activities aimed at strengthening ties between the United States and Mexico, with events like this playing a crucial role in fostering goodwill and understanding.

The Abraham Lincoln Monument in Ciudad Juarez stands as a testament to the historical figure’s significance and the ongoing diplomatic efforts to maintain strong international relationships.

The participation of local municipal authorities in preparing the site also demonstrates a collaborative spirit between the U.S. diplomatic mission and the host city, ensuring the success and dignity of such important commemorative events.

The event is part of a broader series of global tributes, reflecting a concerted effort to honor historical figures and their contributions to democracy and international relations.
