Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Ciudad Juárez, Flooding Expected
Ciudad Juárez, September 22 – Ciudad Juárez is bracing for prolonged heavy rainfall, with authorities issuing a 24-hour alert that began at noon today. The alert warns of potential widespread flooding and waterlogging across various sectors of the city, prompting urgent calls for residents to exercise extreme caution.
Sergio Rodríguez, head of the local Civil Protection agency, confirmed that the alert will remain active until noon tomorrow. He stated that moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast for the entire city, based on information from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) through the El Paso Weather Service, as well as Mexico’s National Meteorological Service.
Saturated Ground Increases Flood Risk
Rodríguez emphasized that the primary concern isn’t just the volume of rain, but its potential to persist for several hours. Recent precipitation has left the ground saturated, meaning water will be absorbed much slower, significantly increasing the risk of flash floods.
Special attention was drawn to Tapioca Street, a known flood-prone area where strong currents have previously caused fatalities and significant material damage. Residents are strongly advised to avoid this street during the alert period.
