IECM Issues Call for Participation in 2026-2027 Local Electoral Process
Mexico City, August 9, 2026 – The General Council of the Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) has officially approved the call for citizens and political parties to participate in the 2026-2027 Local Ordinary Electoral Process (PELO). This crucial electoral period will see the renewal of key political positions within Mexico City, including the integration of the Mexico City Congress, the election of the heads of the 16 mayoralties, and their respective councilors.
The call outlines the foundational principles for citizen and political party involvement in the local popular elections, adhering to the mandates of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, the Political Constitution of Mexico City, the Code of Electoral Institutions and Procedures of Mexico City, and other applicable regulations.
Key Positions to be Renewed in the PELO
During the 2026-2027 PELO, the Mexico City Congress will be renewed, comprising 66 deputies. Of these, 33 will be elected by relative majority, one will be designated as a Migrant Deputy, and 32 will be chosen by proportional representation. Additionally, citizens will elect the heads of the 16 mayoralties and the members of their respective councils.
Inclusivity and Affirmative Actions
As part of the rules for candidate nominations, the agreement stipulates that affirmative actions must be observed for various demographic groups. These include young people, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, those from sexual and gender diversity, as well as members of indigenous peoples and original neighborhoods, indigenous communities, and Afro-Mexican residents in Mexico City, in accordance with current regulations. This ensures a diverse and representative participation in the electoral process.
Electoral Process Timeline and Activities
The PELO is scheduled to commence with a session of the General Council in the first week of September 2026. Prior to the election, several activities will take place, including the registration of independent candidates and those nominated by political parties, as well as those participating in coalitions or common candidacies that meet legal requirements. The election day itself is set for Sunday, June 6, 2027. Following the election, the stages of vote counting, results declaration, and the validation of each election will be carried out.
Dissemination and Accessibility Efforts
The General Council of the IECM has instructed that the call be formally notified to the leadership of political parties accredited before the Institute. Furthermore, it will be disseminated in Mexican embassies and consulates abroad, at the Undersecretariat of the Penitentiary System of the Mexico City Government Secretariat, and at the Secretariat of Original Peoples and Neighborhoods and Resident Indigenous Communities of Mexico City. To ensure broader access and understanding, an executive version of the call will be translated into at least the five indigenous languages most prevalent in Mexico City. Its accessibility will also be guaranteed through audio and video formats with Mexican Sign Language interpretation, aiming to extend its reach among the citizenry.
