Industrial Reconfiguration Impacts Manufacturing Employment in Ciudad Juárez

Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, June 16, 2026 – The loss of jobs in Ciudad Juárez’s manufacturing sector is a result of a combination of international factors and corporate decisions, rather than a problem of state competitiveness, affirmed Ulises Alejandro Fernández Gamboa, Secretary of Innovation and Economic Development. The official highlighted that the employment situation should be analyzed within a broader economic context that affects various regions of the country.

Electromobility Market Deceleration a Key Factor

Fernández Gamboa explained that one of the primary factors has been the deceleration of the electromobility market, stemming from changes in the economic policy of the United States. He recalled that various investments linked to the manufacturing of electric vehicles depended on incentives granted by the U.S. government, which were modified with the arrival of a new federal administration.

He indicated that the reduction of these supports caused several companies to adjust their expansion plans or cancel projects related to electromobility, impacting job creation within the manufacturing industry, particularly in the northern border region.

Shift Towards Electrical and Electronics Sector

Despite these challenges, Fernández Gamboa noted that Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua are currently experiencing a reconfiguration of their productive structure. He pointed out that the electrical and electronics sector has gained ground and, for the first time, has surpassed the automotive sector in terms of investment and exports, reflecting shifts in industrial and commercial trends.

The head of SIDE assured that, although overall employment balances are still affected, sectors such as electronics, commerce, and services are showing growth and continue to attract investments. He added that Chihuahua maintains indicators of resilience in the face of the national and international economic environment, despite the uncertainty generated by the upcoming review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC).

Job Recovery Underway

Regarding labor recovery, he reported that approximately 40 percent of the jobs lost during the end of 2025 have been recovered. He also maintained that the behavior observed in Chihuahua is similar to that recorded in other entities across the country, urging continued monitoring of the labor market’s evolution in the coming months.
