Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua – The Children’s Hospital of Specialties in Ciudad Juarez has achieved a significant medical milestone by successfully performing its first cardiovascular surgery on a 10-month-old infant. The procedure, carried out through the MediChihuahua program, addressed a persistent ductus arteriosus, a congenital heart condition affecting blood flow between the heart and lungs.

Pioneering Surgery for a 10-Month-Old Patient

The 10-month-old patient was diagnosed with persistent ductus arteriosus, a congenital heart defect that alters the normal flow of blood between the heart and lungs. This condition, if left untreated, can lead to serious health complications. The successful surgery represents a major step forward in specialized medical care for infants in the region.

A Coordinated Effort for Comprehensive Care

The patient’s care journey began in October 2025 with a comprehensive evaluation involving specialists from various departments, including Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Pulmonology, and other medical areas. This multidisciplinary team collaborated to establish a precise diagnosis, provide appropriate treatment, and meticulously prepare for the surgical intervention.

Cardiothoracic surgeon Adrián Torres confirmed the operation’s success, stating it proceeded without complications. The infant is currently recovering in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, where they are receiving specialized medical monitoring.

“This is an opportunity to help children with congenital heart disease in Ciudad Juarez, thanks to the coordination of the directors and the great work team of the Children’s Hospital,” expressed Dr. Torres, highlighting the collaborative spirit and dedication of the medical staff.

Strengthening Public Healthcare Services

The Ministry of Health emphasized that such procedures are crucial for correcting diseases affecting the heart, aorta, and blood vessels. These interventions significantly improve patients’ quality of life and reduce the risk of future complications.

This initiative underscores the State Government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the capacity of public hospitals in Ciudad Juarez. The goal is to provide specialized, timely, and highly complex medical care to the population, ensuring that advanced treatments are accessible to those in need.

This pioneering surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Specialties in Ciudad Juarez marks a new era for pediatric cardiology in the region, offering hope and improved health outcomes for infants with complex heart conditions.
