Lime Electric Scooters Make a Comeback in Mexico City

Mexico City, June 16 – After an absence of over five years, Lime, the micromobility company, has officially relaunched its electric scooter rental service in Mexico City. The return is part of a 60-day pilot program, conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Mobility (Semovi), to evaluate the feasibility of integrating electric scooters back into the urban landscape.

The initial foray of electric scooters into CDMX several years ago saw a surge in popularity, attracting numerous companies. However, high maintenance costs and unit theft ultimately led to their disappearance. Despite this, the concept of micromobility took root, and today, electric vehicles are a common sight on the city’s streets. This evolving urban environment has prompted Lime to give the market a second chance.

Enhanced Operations and User Experience

Lime’s last operation in Mexico City was in 2019. The company expresses enthusiasm to demonstrate how much its services have matured since then, drawing on seven years of experience collaborating with cities worldwide. This includes implementing new technologies and innovations designed to meet the unique needs of local communities.

“Lime is confident that residents will immediately notice the improvements in terms of riding and correct parking, as well as the operational experience the company has gained from serving hundreds of cities globally,” stated Lime in a press release. The company also highlighted that many global cities, such as Santiago, Paris, London, Barcelona, and San Francisco, successfully operate traditional fixed-station bike-sharing programs alongside hybrid models like Lime’s.

Key Initiatives for the Pilot Program

During the 60-day pilot program, several key actions will be implemented to ensure a successful evaluation:

  • On-foot patrol teams: Personnel will be deployed in key areas to manage parking, assist users, and maintain order on the streets.
  • Exclusive parking zones: Designated parking areas will be established near high-traffic destinations to organize vehicle storage during major events.
  • Valet Parking: Lime will coordinate with Semovi to offer valet parking locations, similar to the successful trial days during local soccer league matches in May.

Affordable Pricing and Uber Integration

To encourage adoption, Lime is offering a fixed rate of $99.99 for up to 90 minutes of travel. This represents a discount of more than 60% compared to the standard fare and includes free unlocks and preferential per-minute rates. The offer is valid for flexible use within a five-day period.

Additionally, users will be able to book Lime scooters directly through the Uber app, allowing them to locate nearby scooters and pay using their registered Uber payment method, a feature previously available when Uber operated its own electric scooter service.

Safety and Education Initiatives

Lime has also committed to conducting activations to distribute helmets to users and provide instruction on safe riding practices and proper parking. These initiatives address two significant challenges encountered during its previous stint in Mexico City, where scooters were often ridden on sidewalks and amidst traffic, and frequently left improperly parked or discarded on the ground.

The return of Lime signifies a renewed effort to provide sustainable and convenient transportation options for Mexico City residents and visitors, with a strong focus on improving safety and operational efficiency based on past experiences and global best practices.
