Mexico City, March 22 – In an operation stemming from continuous surveillance in the heart of the capital, elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the theft of specialized merchandise in the Cuauhtémoc borough. The loot did not consist of cash or common electronic devices, but rather collectible anime cards, a market that has seen an exponential increase in value in recent years.

In flagrante delicto: How 20,000 pesos in anime cards were stolen in Mexico City

The events were recorded on Friday morning at a commercial establishment located on Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas, an emblematic area for “geek” culture and imports in Mexico City. According to police reports, the manager of the establishment arrived at the property to begin his workday when he noticed the presence of a stranger inside.

Following an immediate report through emergency channels and coordination with operators from the Command and Control Center (C2) Centro, sector patrols arrived at the scene to intercept the suspect before he could flee.

Caught with Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh! cards: They were rare collector’s items

During the preventive review, in accordance with police action protocols, officers located two folders containing various examples of cards from popular franchises such as Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Digimon among the detainee’s belongings.

Although at first glance they might seem like conventional game items, the victim estimated the value of the merchandise at approximately 20,000 pesos. This cost is due to the rarity of the pieces and their state of preservation, factors that make them highly coveted assets in the secondary collector’s market.

SSC-CDMX initiates investigation file against the detainee

The implicated individual was placed at the disposal of the Public Ministry agent, where the corresponding investigation file for the crime of robbery of a commercial establishment was initiated. His legal status will be determined in the coming hours.

This incident highlights the necessary security in specialized establishments, given that niche items have become attractive targets for crime due to their easy transport and high liquidity on social media.
