Mandatory Waste Separation in Ciudad Juárez: What You Need to Know

As of February 2026, mandatory waste separation is not yet implemented across all of Ciudad Juárez. However, the ‘Juárez Renovado’ pilot program, which began on September 4 of last year, continues its operations in the Valle del Sol sector, corresponding to collection zone 3.

The ‘Juárez Renovado’ Pilot Program: Objectives and Implementation

This initiative was launched as a differentiated waste collection model with the primary goals of reducing urban pollution, fostering recycling, and improving solid waste management within the city. Since its inception, residents in the pilot zone have been actively separating their waste into two main categories: organic and inorganic, adhering to specific guidelines for proper disposal.

Currently, the program has not been extended to other neighborhoods, as an evaluation process is underway to determine the feasibility of its broader expansion.

How Does Waste Separation Work in the ‘Juárez Renovado’ Program?

The waste separation model in Ciudad Juárez establishes two fundamental classifications:

  • Organic Waste: This category includes food scraps, fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, garden waste, and other biodegradable materials. Residents are advised to place these items in reusable bags or special containers, ensuring they are free of liquids to facilitate processing.
  • Inorganic Waste: This category encompasses cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, and textiles. For efficient recycling, these materials must be clean and free from food residue.

Before the program’s launch in September, informative meetings were held with Valle del Sol residents to explain the process and address any questions regarding waste classification. The program also introduced a digital search tool, allowing citizens to check if their neighborhood is part of the active phase.

When Will Waste Separation Become Mandatory Across Ciudad Juárez?

As of February 2026, there is no confirmed date for mandatory city-wide waste separation. Environmental management experts emphasize that such projects require thorough technical evaluation, active citizen participation, and operational adjustments before a full-scale expansion can be considered.

The pilot phase in Valle del Sol serves as a crucial indicator for assessing:

  • The level of citizen participation.
  • The reduction of mixed waste.
  • The efficiency of differentiated collection.
  • The volume of recyclable materials recovered.

Given that Ciudad Juárez generates thousands of tons of urban solid waste each month, an effective waste separation model could significantly impact urban sustainability and help reduce illegal dumping sites.
