Mexico City, July 20 – The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) in Mexico City has issued a critical alert regarding an increase in home robberies and telephone frauds, specifically highlighting two new modalities: the “False Delivery Driver” and “The Boss” scam. The SSC urges the public to exercise extreme caution as summer vacation approaches.
“False Delivery Driver” Scheme Targets Vacant Homes
The SSC detailed that in the “False Delivery Driver” scheme, criminals pose as delivery personnel from various platforms. Their objective is to ascertain whether a home is unoccupied. If no one answers the door or doorbell, they assume the residence is empty and attempt to illegally enter and commit robbery.

“The Boss” Scam: A Sophisticated Telephone Fraud
The second modality, known as “The Boss” scam (La Patrona), involves fraudsters making phone calls or sending messages. They simulate an emergency and impersonate a family member, a boss, or a property owner. Their goal is to pressure the victim into providing money, valuables, or confidential information under false pretenses.
SSC’s Recommendations to Prevent Robberies and Frauds
In response to these threats, the SSC has provided a series of recommendations:
- For “False Delivery Driver” Prevention:
- Do not open the door if you are not expecting a delivery.
- Verify the identity of anyone requesting access using cameras or video surveillance systems.
- Always ask for the delivery person’s identification and order number before accepting any package.
- Reinforce doors, windows, locks, and other access points to deter criminals.
- For Vacationers:
- Avoid posting travel plans on social media.
- Ensure your home is properly secured before leaving.
- Maintain communication with neighbors and ask them to report any suspicious activity.
- For Telephone Fraud (“The Boss” Scam) Prevention:
- Be wary of calls or messages claiming an emergency.
- Verify information independently before taking any action.
- Never make deposits or hand over money without directly confirming the situation with the involved family member or employer.
The SSC emphasized that public cooperation is crucial in combating these criminal activities. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious incidents.
Reporting Suspicious Activities
The SSC reminds the public that any suspicious call or attempted fraud can be reported through the “Mi Policía” application, on their social media accounts @SSC_CDMX and @UCS_GCDMX on X (formerly Twitter), or by calling 55 5208 9898.
These warnings come as part of an ongoing effort by Mexico City authorities to protect its citizens and their property, particularly during periods when homes may be left unattended due to holiday travel.
