Mexico City Anticipates Heaviest Rainfall of the Week
Mexico City, June 1, 2026 – Mexico City is bracing for its most intense rainfall of the week, with meteorologists forecasting over 50 mm of precipitation in just a few hours. This comes as the North Atlantic tropical cyclone season officially commenced on June 1, bringing increased concerns about potential flooding and strong water currents on city streets.
Factors Contributing to Intense Storms
The convergence of several meteorological factors is creating ideal conditions for severe storms across the capital and other central and southern Mexican states. These include a low-pressure trough over the central part of the country, favorable upper-level divergence, tropical waves, and local conditions.
Isolated Storms Expected Early in the Week
Cloud cover and the likelihood of rain began to increase on Monday afternoon. The most significant accumulations, exceeding 20 mm, are forecast for the western and southern mountainous areas. The rest of the city is expected to see between 5 to 20 mm of rain.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed, maintain distance between vehicles, and avoid distractions during storms to enhance safety.
Between 3 PM and 9 PM on Monday, there is a possibility of hail and strong wind gusts in areas experiencing thunderstorms. Very similar conditions are anticipated between Tuesday afternoon and evening, with isolated rainfall totals potentially exceeding 20 mm.
Storms Intensify Mid-Week
From Wednesday onwards, and for the remainder of the week, the capital will experience its wettest period, particularly leading into the upcoming weekend. Widespread accumulations of 20 mm are possible across the city, with isolated totals surpassing 50 mm.
During this period, all boroughs will be affected by the storms, but Tlalpan and Milpa Alta are expected to receive the highest rainfall totals by Sunday, with localized values exceeding 100 mm. The rest of the city could see accumulations between 60 to 100 mm.
Following the rain, a refreshing cool down is expected, with nights becoming colder in most parts of the city, especially in areas that experienced storms.
Flood Risk and Safety Recommendations
These intense storms are expected to deliver significant rainfall in a short period, potentially causing strong water currents on roadways and localized flooding in areas with poor drainage. Residents are encouraged to activate Meteored notifications for timely weather alerts.
It is also crucial to follow the measures and recommendations issued by the Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) of the capital, as well as any alerts that may be activated during the week due to severe storms.
In case of heavy rainfall affecting your home or neighborhood, you can report it by calling 911, 55 5683 2222 for SGIRPC, 55 5658 1111 for Locatel, or the H2O Line of the Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management (SEGIAGUA) by dialing *426.
Important Storm Safety Information
It is important to remember that storms may be accompanied by electrical discharges, hail, and wind gusts of up to 40 km/h, as well as intense rain capable of generating floods and strong water currents.
Always seek shelter in a building during electrical storms. According to a study by the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change at UNAM, at least 2,470 people died in Mexico between 1998 and 2021 due to electrical discharges associated with lightning. Therefore, protecting your safety during a storm is paramount.
