Mexico City Congress Moves to Reduce Gender Inequality in Public Budget
Mexico City, March 8 – In a significant move towards fostering substantive equality, the Mexico City Congress has approved a proposal aimed at reducing the disparity between women and men in the allocation and implementation of the public budget. Deputy Batres Guadarrama presented her proposal on the eve of International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8. Her objective is to ensure that Mexico City’s institutions earmark and evaluate actions, programs, and budgetary allocations in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Secretariat of Administration and Finance of Mexico City.
During her address, the deputy underscored the importance of gender-responsive public budgets, stating, “Public budgets with a gender perspective allocate and earmark resources to address differentiated needs by gender, making them key public policy tools.” She further emphasized that these budgets are crucial for translating the legal achievements and rights fought for by women into tangible benefits through social programs and existing laws in the capital.
