Mexico City Congress Boosts Capital’s Tourism Sector
Mexico City, March 31 – The Mexico City Congress, through its Tourism Commission, is actively engaged in promoting the capital’s tourism sector. This commitment is evidenced in its recently approved Third Semiannual Report of Activities, which details participation in various events and legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening tourism from the local legislative branch.
Third Semiannual Report Highlights Key Achievements
During the Sixth Ordinary Session of the Tourism Commission, held remotely, members approved the Third Semiannual Report of Activities. This report covers the period from September 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026, and outlines the commission’s active involvement in tourism-related events, the awarding of the “Tourism Merit Medal,” the appearance of the Secretary of Tourism, and the status of various legislative instruments.
The session was led by Deputy Luisa Fernanda Ledesma Alpízar, President of the commission. Other participating legislators included Ana Luisa Buendía García (MORENA), Elvia Estrada Barba (PVEM), Frida Jimena Guillén Ortiz and Olivia Garza de los Santos (both PAN), and Erika Lizeth Rosales Medina (Asociación Parlamentaria Progresista de la Transformación).
Active Participation in Key Tourism Events
The report underscores the Tourism Commission’s presence at several significant events, demonstrating its commitment to the sector. These included the inauguration of the mural “Memory and Territory” at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) “Benito Juárez,” the Cempasúchil Flower Festival, the Mexico International Festival of Lights “Solo la Luz,” and the exhibition “Hands of the City: Alebrijes and Living Craft.”
Furthermore, the commission participated in the Day of the Dead celebration and related events such as “Tianquiz(tli) at Sunset,” the Mole Fair, the “Milpateando” project, and the unveiling of the cover of Chilango magazine featuring “Capital con Corazón: a destination that conquers.”
“Tourism Merit Medal” Recognizes Outstanding Contributions
The report also highlights the awarding of the “Tourism Merit Medal. Tourist Ambassador of Mexico City.” This prestigious recognition was bestowed upon nine individuals and the “Colibrí Viajero Program” for their exceptional contributions to strengthening the tourism sector in the capital.
Secretary of Tourism Presents Impressive Growth Figures
During the appearance of the local Secretary of Tourism, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, as part of the review of Mayor Clara Brugada Molina’s First Government Report 2025, significant growth in the sector was reported. Mexico City recorded over 60.5 million visitors, marking a substantial increase compared to previous years. According to the Secretary, these tourists generated an economic impact exceeding 157 billion pesos, with an average hotel occupancy rate close to 65 percent.
Legislative Progress for Tourism Development
In terms of legislative activities, the commission is currently analyzing six initiatives and five Points of Agreement. Additionally, two opinions have been approved, and various sessions have addressed topics crucial for the development of the capital’s tourism sector. These legislative efforts aim to provide a robust legal framework to support and enhance tourism in Mexico City.
