Mexico City, February 17 – The Mexico City Congress has announced a modification to the call for nominations for the “Medal of Merit for the Defense of the Environment of Mexico City.” Following the approval of an agreement by the relevant commission, the period for submitting nominations will be from February 23 to March 6, 2026.

Environmental Commission Approves Agreement

On Monday, the Commission for the Preservation of the Environment, Climate Change, and Ecological Protection of the local Congress approved Agreement number AC/CCDMX/IIIL/CPMACCPE/002/2026, which modifies the original call for the award. The decision was made during a virtual session.

Deputies Elvia Estrada Barba, President of the commission, and Luisa Fernanda Ledesma Alpízar of MC, along with legislators Andrés Sánchez Miranda of PAN, and Paulo Emilio García González and Juan Estuardo Rubio Gualito, both from MORENA, all voted in favor of the agreement.

Electronic Submissions and Recognition Categories

The updated document stipulates that nominations will be received through an electronic form. This form will be made available via the Parliamentary Gazette of the capital’s Congress, the institutional web portal, and the official social media channels of this legislative body.

The medal seeks to honor women, men, and collectives who have made outstanding contributions to environmental preservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and ecological protection within Mexico City.

The call is open to the general public, various organizations, academic institutions, and civil society organizations involved in Mexico City’s environmental agenda. Aspirants can be nominated across three distinct categories:

  • Civil Associations: For their organized and continuous work in favor of the environment.
  • Environmental Activists: For their efforts in raising awareness, making complaints, and promoting legislative action.
  • Researchers or Academics: For generating scientific, technical, or legal knowledge that strengthens public policies and environmental legislation.

Three-Stage Process for Award Selection

The selection process for the medal will unfold in three stages:

  1. Call and Reception of Applications: The period during which nominations are submitted.
  2. Analysis and Dictamination by the Commission: The commission will objectively analyze the merits of each nomination, ensuring gender parity in the selection process.
  3. Solemn Plenary Session: The medal will be presented during a solemn session of the Plenary, following an agreement by the Political Coordination Board (JUCOPO).

The commission’s approved resolution will be submitted to the Board of Directors for a vote in the Plenary, and the final decision will be definitive and unappealable.

In accordance with the Organic Law and Regulations of the local Congress, as well as JUCOPO agreements modifying the period and number of medals, this award will be presented only once during the Third Legislature, specifically in the Second Ordinary Period of the Second Year of Exercise.

The modification ensures a streamlined and accessible nomination process, aiming to recognize a wider range of individuals and groups dedicated to environmental causes in Mexico City.
