Mexico City Congress Reiterates Call to Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

Mexico City, June 10, 2026 – The Mexico City Congress has issued a renewed call to action to address the alarming increase in motorcycle accidents across the capital. Deputy Pablo Trejo Pérez presented a Point of Agreement, urging the Ministry of Mobility (SEMOVI) and the city’s 16 alcaldías to intensify their efforts in prevention, awareness, and training regarding road safety.

During a virtual session of the Permanent Commission of the capital’s Congress, the PRD legislator highlighted the significant rise in traffic incidents involving motorcycles. He emphasized that the growing use of motorcycles, particularly as a work tool, has led to a concerning surge in accidents, posing a public health challenge that demands immediate attention.

Alarming Statistics Underscore the Urgency

Trejo Pérez cited data from the Public Health Report on Road Safety, indicating a stark increase in fatalities and hospitalizations related to motorcycle accidents. Between 2018 and 2023, motorcycle-related deaths in Mexico soared by over 52 percent, while hospitalizations from such incidents doubled. In Mexico City, a persistent upward trend in both fatalities and injuries among motorcyclists has been observed, underscoring the need for robust preventive policies that extend beyond mere sanctions.

“The true transformation of road safety lies in strengthening road education, which constitutes the set of fundamental principles, values, and practices to build a culture of displacement that guarantees, above all, the right to life and physical integrity,” affirmed Deputy Trejo Pérez.

Vulnerable Road Users Require Enhanced Protection

The legislator underscored that motorcyclists represent one of the most vulnerable groups in urban mobility. Therefore, it is crucial to promote technical training, awareness campaigns, and preventive measures aimed at reducing risky behaviors and averting accidents. He called upon his fellow legislators to support this exhortation, emphasizing the collective responsibility to foster safer, more responsible, and respectful mobility for all individuals sharing public spaces in Mexico City.

The initiative seeks to mitigate the severe consequences of motorcycle accidents, which not only result in tragic loss of life and serious injuries but also place a substantial burden on public health services. By reinforcing educational programs and practical training, the Congress aims to instill a stronger culture of road safety among motorcyclists and other road users.

Collaborative Efforts for a Safer City

The proposed Point of Agreement necessitates a collaborative approach between SEMOVI and the alcaldías to implement comprehensive strategies. These strategies are expected to include:

  • Enhanced Public Awareness Campaigns: Disseminating information on safe riding practices, the importance of protective gear, and adherence to traffic laws.
  • Accessible Training Programs: Offering practical riding courses and defensive driving techniques for motorcyclists of all experience levels.
  • Improved Road Infrastructure: Identifying and addressing hazardous road conditions that contribute to motorcycle accidents.
  • Stricter Enforcement with an Educational Focus: While not solely relying on sanctions, ensuring that traffic laws are enforced in a manner that also educates and promotes safer behavior.

The Congress’s call to action reflects a growing concern within the city’s legislative body regarding the well-being of its citizens. The aim is to create an urban environment where all forms of transportation can coexist safely, and where the risks associated with motorcycle use are significantly reduced through proactive and educational interventions.

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Mexico City Congress to address various urban challenges, including public safety, infrastructure improvements, and the overall quality of life for its residents. The focus on motorcycle safety is particularly timely given the increasing popularity of motorcycles for both personal use and delivery services.

The outcome of this Point of Agreement will depend on the responsiveness and cooperation of SEMOVI and the 16 alcaldías. The Congress anticipates a concerted effort to implement the proposed measures, ultimately leading to a reduction in motorcycle accidents and a safer road network for everyone in Mexico City.
