Mexico City Congress Urges Installation of Dog Water Fountains in Parks Amid High Temperatures

Mexico City, April 11, 2026 – A member of the Green Ecologist Party (PVEM) in the Mexico City Congress has called for the installation of dog water fountains in public parks and gardens across the capital. The initiative aims to protect pets from the risks associated with high temperatures and lack of access to water in public spaces.

Congresswoman Elvia Guadalupe Estrada Barba highlighted a silent but growing problem in Mexico City: the absence of adequate water sources for pets in public areas. “There are public spaces where pets do not have access to something as basic as water, and this forces owners to improvise or, in the worst cases, expose animals to dangerous conditions,” Estrada Barba warned.

The Need for Adequate Hydration for Pets

Estrada Barba emphasized that in many of Mexico City’s parks, the lack of proper water fountains compels pet owners to bring improvised containers or limit the time their pets spend outdoors. This situation not only poses health risks to animals but also contributes to hygiene and coexistence issues in these shared spaces.

The congresswoman underscored that high temperatures significantly increase the risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and even death in companion animals, especially when they lack access to water during their walks. This proposal seeks not only to safeguard the health and lives of thousands of pets but also to enhance coexistence in public spaces and move towards a more responsible, orderly, and animal welfare-conscious city.

Pets as Essential Family Members

Estrada Barba noted that pets have become an essential part of millions of families. It is estimated that 7 out of 10 households have at least one sentient being, reflecting their importance not only as companions but as integral members of the family unit. Dogs and cats contribute to people’s emotional well-being by helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and loneliness. Consequently, thousands of families visit parks and gardens daily to spend time with their pets, but this routine faces a growing challenge.

Support for Pet-Friendly Initiatives

The initiative does not oppose the growth of pet-friendly establishments. On the contrary, the Green Party recognizes and supports businesses that promote inclusive and accessible spaces for pets. The call is directed at the authorities of the 16 alcaldías (boroughs) to prioritize the installation of these water fountains.

Call to Action for Alcaldías

The popular representative of the Green Ecologist Party of Mexico urged all 16 alcaldías to install water fountains in parks and gardens to ensure access to clean and safe water for companion animals. This measure is seen as crucial for the well-being of pets and for fostering a more harmonious environment in public recreational areas.

This move comes as part of a broader effort to address animal welfare concerns in Mexico City, acknowledging the increasing role of pets in urban households and the responsibilities that come with it.
