Mexico City, March 4, 2026 – The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, officially inaugurated the Coordination Cabinet between Mayor’s Offices and the Capital Government in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. This initiative seeks to articulate strategic actions across key areas including security, infrastructure, tourism, and social programs, ensuring the city is fully prepared to host the international event.
Cabinet to Convene Regularly Ahead of World Cup
The inauguration ceremony took place at the Museum of Mexico City. As per the established schedule, the cabinet will hold bi-weekly sessions throughout March and April, transitioning to weekly meetings in May and June. This rigorous schedule aligns with local constitutional mandates and the Organic Law of the Executive Power, underscoring the commitment to comprehensive preparation.
Enhanced Security Measures and Reduced Crime Rates
During the presentation, Brugada highlighted the city’s improved security landscape, noting a 58 percent reduction in high-impact crimes and a 46 percent decrease in intentional homicides compared to 2019 figures. The operational plan for the World Cup includes the deployment of 350 new patrol cars, a vast network of 135,000 video surveillance cameras, and the participation of 90,000 trained police officers. Furthermore, there will be close coordination with the State of Mexico and the federal government to ensure a unified security front.
Focus on Infrastructure, Services, and Tourism
The cabinet’s efforts in infrastructure and services will concentrate on four primary axes: Infrastructure and Services, Government and Security, Tourist Attention, and Sports and Social Programs. Proactive measures are also planned to address the rainy season and to regulate public spaces effectively.
To enhance the visitor experience, a multilingual tourism chatbot named “Cholit” will be launched. This tool is designed to provide comprehensive information on routes, museums, and sports activities. Additionally, 100 improvement initiatives are slated for iconic areas such as the Historic Center, Xochimilco, the Basilica of Guadalupe, and Coyoacán, aiming to elevate the overall tourist appeal and functionality of these sites.
Largest Football Class and International Standards
In the social sphere, a significant event is scheduled for March 15: the world’s largest football class will be held in the Zócalo, serving as a pre-tournament activity. The Capital Government emphasized that these concerted actions are designed to solidify Mexico City’s position as a World Cup host city, meeting and exceeding international standards in security, infrastructure, and visitor services.
The comprehensive strategy underscores Mexico City’s ambition to deliver a seamless and memorable experience for both residents and international visitors during the 2026 World Cup, showcasing the city’s capabilities and vibrant culture on a global stage.
