Mexico City Issues Yellow Alert for Cold Temperatures in Tlalpan

The Secretariat of Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) has warned Mexico City residents to take extreme precautions due to forecasts of low temperatures for Saturday, December 13th. This has led to the activation of a Yellow Alert specifically for the Tlalpan borough; however, residents across the city are advised to remain vigilant.

Yellow Alert Activated in Tlalpan Due to Cold Snap

Through its official X account, the agency indicated that temperatures are expected to range from 4 to 6°C between 3:00 AM and 8:00 AM. In response, the SGIRPC has issued a series of recommendations to help citizens protect their health during this cold period.

Key Recommendations for Cold Weather

Given the period of low temperatures, authorities have issued several crucial recommendations:

  • Bundle up appropriately, covering your nose and mouth.
  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature.
  • Drink plenty of water and consume fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and C.
  • Use moisturizing cream to protect your skin from the cold.
  • If using heaters or fireplaces, ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Keep your vaccination schedule updated (COVID-19, Influenza, and Pneumococcus).
  • Protect children, the elderly, and pregnant individuals.
  • Keep pets indoors (do not leave them exposed to the elements).

Rainfall and Broader Weather Outlook for Mexico City

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) has also indicated a possibility of isolated showers in Mexico City during Saturday afternoon. The estimated maximum temperature for the day is 23 to 25 °C, with a minimum of 9 to 11 °C. Winds from the north are expected to be between 10 to 20 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 40 km/h.

National Weather Forecast: Front 21 Approaches

The SMN is monitoring the advance of a new cold front (Front 21), which is expected to approach Mexico’s northern and northeastern borders, influencing weather patterns across the country.

Rainfall Projections Across Mexico:

  • Heavy to Very Heavy Rains (50 to 75 mm): Quintana Roo.
  • Showers with Strong Rains (25 to 50 mm): Chiapas, Campeche, and Yucatán.
  • Intervals of Showers (5 to 25 mm): Tamaulipas (coast), Veracruz (Sotavento, Las Montañas, Papaloapan, Los Tuxtlas, and Olmeca regions), Puebla (Valle Serdán and Tehuacán-Sierra Negra regions), Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Tabasco.
  • Isolated Rains (0.1 to 5 mm): Jalisco, Colima, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Mexico City, and Morelos.

Temperature Extremes Expected:

  • Maximum Temperatures of 35 to 40 °C: Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Campeche, and Yucatán.
  • Maximum Temperatures of 30 to 35 °C: Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua (southwest), Durango (west), Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla (southwest), Morelos, and Tabasco.
  • Minimum Temperatures of -10 to -5 °C with Frost (early Saturday): Mountainous areas of Chihuahua and Durango.
  • Minimum Temperatures of -5 to 0 °C with Frost (early Saturday): Mountainous areas of Baja California, Sonora, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala, and Puebla.
  • Minimum Temperatures of 0 to 5 °C (early Saturday): Mountainous areas of Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.

Wind Conditions:

  • North Component Wind (20 to 30 km/h with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h): Oaxaca (Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec).
  • Wind (20 to 30 km/h with gusts of 40 to 60 km/h): Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas.
