Mexico City Launches ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin’ to Bring Tourism to Vulnerable Children
Mexico City, March 7, 2026 – The Mexico City government has initiated a new strategy, ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin,’ designed to provide local tourism opportunities for vulnerable children and adolescents. This program, an extension of the existing ‘Colibrí Viajero’ for seniors, aims to ensure that all children have the chance to explore their city and beyond, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and promoting their right to recreation.
A Right to Explore: From City Landmarks to the Sea
Alejandra Frausto Guerrero, the Secretary of Tourism for Mexico City, officially launched the ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin’ strategy on Saturday morning at the Monument to the Revolution. She emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “At a time when other countries are betting on hatred and war, we are betting on love, peace, and the happiness of childhood through tourism.”
The program will take beneficiaries to significant landmarks within the capital, including museums, the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacan, and even the sea. Frausto highlighted the fundamental nature of such experiences, asserting, “Who will get to know the sea with Colibrí? I believe knowing the sea should also be a human right. Everyone should have the right to know the sea.”
Fostering a Sense of Belonging and Local Pride
Beyond providing recreational opportunities, ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin’ seeks to instill in children a deep appreciation for their city. Frausto underscored that “tourism should not only be for those who come from outside, but also for those who leave from here.” She added that “tourism teaches us to see our city, our own country, in a different way.” The Secretary confirmed that ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin’ is set to become a permanent program.
The first phase of ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin’ has already benefited 1,000 minors, identified as a priority group for welfare, inclusion, and comprehensive development in Mexico City. These children have begun their journeys to explore the city’s rich tourist, historical, and cultural heritage, with guaranteed dignified, accessible, quality, and non-discriminatory services.
Pedagogical, Playful, and Secure Routes
The routes and itineraries for this new strategy were specifically designed with children in mind, incorporating pedagogical, playful, and safety-focused approaches. This ensures that the experiences are not only enjoyable but also educational and secure for all participants.
Prior to ‘Colibrí Chiquitzin,’ the ‘Colibrí Viajero’ program successfully brought tourism to various destinations, including Acapulco, for adult beneficiaries, as noted by authorities.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment from Mexico City’s government to enhance the quality of life for its most vulnerable residents, recognizing tourism as a powerful tool for social development and personal growth.
