Mexico City, December 23 – The Head of Government, Clara Brugada, officially inaugurated the “Individual Transportation Replacement” program today, a significant initiative designed to support taxi drivers in Mexico City by facilitating the upgrade of their vehicles. The program, which commenced with the launch of vehicle scrapping facilities, aims to replace older taxis-those with more than 10 years of service-with modern hybrid or electric models.
Financial Incentives for a Greener Fleet
The core of the program involves substantial financial incentives for taxi drivers. Brugada detailed the support structure:
- 120,000 Mexican Pesos: For drivers opting to replace their old car with a new one.
- 150,000 Mexican Pesos: For those choosing a new hybrid vehicle (electric and non-polluting hydrocarbon).
- 200,000 Mexican Pesos: For drivers acquiring a fully electric vehicle, emphasizing the city’s commitment to zero emissions.
“This program will allow Mexico City to transition to a transportation model that does not pollute and that fosters the economy of taxi drivers,” stated Brugada during the launch. The application period for this phase of the program ran from September 30 to November 3, managed through the official website of the Ministry of Mobility.
Beyond Vehicle Replacement: A Holistic Approach
Brugada emphasized that the vehicle renewal is just the first pillar of a broader, multi-faceted strategy to transform Mexico City’s taxi service. The program encompasses three additional key axes:
1. Technological Investment (Starting 2026)
A significant focus will be placed on technology, with plans to invest in developing a proprietary service application for taxis. This initiative aims to modernize dispatch and service delivery, enhancing efficiency and customer experience.
2. Enhanced Safety Measures
Recognizing the critical importance of safety for both drivers and passengers, the program will introduce advanced security features. These include:
- Geolocation systems (GPS)
- Panic buttons
- In-taxi video cameras
- Comprehensive monitoring from taxi stands
“We will support to ensure that the safety of taxi service in the city is guaranteed,” Brugada assured, highlighting the commitment to a secure urban transport environment.
3. Tourist Training for Drivers (Ahead of the 2026 World Cup)
In anticipation of the 2026 World Cup, a dedicated training program will be implemented for taxi drivers, focusing on tourist services. This initiative aims to equip drivers with the necessary skills and knowledge to cater to international visitors, enhancing Mexico City’s reputation as a welcoming global destination.
Significant Progress and Future Commitments
Brugada proudly announced that 800 concessioned transport units underwent transformation through the scrapping process this year. She pledged to increase this number significantly in the coming year, underscoring the government’s sustained commitment to modernizing the city’s public transport infrastructure.
This comprehensive program reflects Mexico City’s proactive stance on environmental sustainability, economic development for its citizens, and preparation for major international events. By integrating financial aid with technological upgrades, safety enhancements, and specialized training, the city aims to establish a leading model for urban transportation.
