Mexico City Libraries Must Modernize, Says Deputy Villarreal Cantú

Mexico City, February 14 – Deputy Ernesto Villarreal Cantú has called for the urgent modernization of public libraries in Mexico City, advocating for their transformation from mere book depositories into vibrant centers for learning, innovation, and digital culture. The proposal, presented to the Mexico City Congress, seeks to amend Article 3 of the Libraries Law and Article 9 of the Education Law, both pertaining to Mexico City, to officially recognize these spaces as integral components of educational and community infrastructure.

Speaking from the legislative chamber in Donceles, Villarreal Cantú emphasized the necessity for the capital’s public libraries to align with global realities, where access to knowledge extends beyond printed materials. He highlighted the growing need for digital literacy and expanded technological competencies among the populace.

“What is being proposed is something more serious, more profound, and more honest: to change the logic from the law so that our public libraries in Mexico City, gradually and sustainably, become centers of learning, innovation, and digital culture,” stated the Coordinator of the PT Parliamentary Group.
