Mexico City, May 21 – In response to a significant increase in property invasions and dispossession, a local deputy from the National Action Party (PAN), Diego Garrido, has introduced an initiative to establish a “Real Estate Alert” system. This mechanism aims to promptly inform legitimate property owners of any suspicious modifications to the legal status of their real estate.
New Alert System to Protect Property Owners
The proposed “Real Estate Alert” system is designed to send notifications via text message, WhatsApp, or email to property owners when any unusual activity or attempt to alter the legal status of their properties is detected by the Public Property Registry. The goal is to enable owners to take preventive action against potential fraud or invasion attempts.
Deputy Garrido highlighted the urgency of this measure, noting that over the past seven years, more than 30,000 investigation files have been opened for the crime of dispossession in Mexico City. This figure underscores the severe extent of the issue within the capital.
Combating Criminal Networks and Impunity
According to Garrido, the “Real Estate Alert” would be a crucial step towards safeguarding citizens from criminal networks that operate through property invasions and the falsification of documents. However, he emphasized that this preventive system must be complemented by firm actions from judicial authorities to prevent impunity from continuing to benefit invaders.
The initiative seeks to provide an early warning mechanism for homeowners, allowing them to respond swiftly to protect their assets. This proactive approach is expected to deter illicit activities and provide greater security for property owners in Mexico City.
Rising Concerns Over Property Crime
The problem of property dispossession has become a growing concern in Mexico City, with numerous cases reported across various neighborhoods. Criminal groups often exploit legal loopholes and forged documents to seize properties, leaving legitimate owners in protracted legal battles.
The proposed “Real Estate Alert” system aims to create a more transparent and responsive environment for property transactions and ownership. By directly notifying owners of any suspicious activity, the initiative seeks to empower them with timely information to defend their rights.
Complementary Measures and Future Outlook
While the “Real Estate Alert” focuses on prevention, Deputy Garrido stressed the importance of robust enforcement by law enforcement and judicial bodies. He argued that without effective prosecution and penalties, the problem of dispossession would persist.
The initiative is currently under review by the local legislature. If approved, it could significantly enhance property security in Mexico City and serve as a model for other urban centers facing similar challenges. The successful implementation of such a system would require close coordination between the Public Property Registry, law enforcement agencies, and property owners.
Citizens are encouraged to stay informed about the legal status of their properties and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. The “Real Estate Alert” represents a proactive effort to address a complex issue that affects thousands of residents in Mexico City.
