Mexico City, February 27, 2026 – Mexico City (CDMX) has officially announced its selection as the host city for the 14th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF14) in 2028. This significant event, organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), is recognized globally as one of the most important gatherings for discussions on sustainable urban development.

CDMX to Showcase Public Policies and Sustainable Development

The Government of Mexico City stated that hosting WUF14 will allow the city to “showcase to the world the public policies that have transformed the capital into an open, diverse, innovative, and committed city with sustainable development.” This will be a crucial platform for demonstrating the city’s progress and initiatives to an international audience.

What is the UN-Habitat World Urban Forum?

Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001 and convened by UN-Habitat since 2002, the World Urban Forum takes place every two years. It serves as the primary global platform for dialogue among public policy makers, local governments, civil society, the private sector, academics, and international organizations. The forum addresses the challenges faced by contemporary cities and plays a vital role in evaluating the progress of the New Urban Agenda.

Benefits for Mexico City

According to the press release from the Government of Mexico City, the WUF14 event will be a “historic” opportunity to strengthen the city’s international positioning as a leading destination for MICE tourism (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), urban innovation, and sustainable development. The government anticipates the attendance of thousands of participants from international governments, universities, social organizations, and businesses, which is expected to generate several key benefits:

  • Increase in international visitors: A significant boost in the number of tourists and delegates.
  • High hotel occupancy and economic spillover: Expected full capacity in hotels and substantial economic benefits for the local economy.
  • Strengthening of congress and convention tourism: Reinforcing CDMX’s reputation as a prime location for major international events.
  • Global projection of the city’s cultural, gastronomic, and tourist offerings: An opportunity to highlight Mexico City’s rich heritage and attractions.
  • Opportunities for investment and international cooperation: Facilitating new partnerships and investments in the city.

The Secretary of Tourism of Mexico City, in collaboration with the Mixed Fund for Tourism Promotion, will work closely with the Government of CDMX, UN-Habitat, and various international stakeholders to ensure the successful organization of the forum.

This event underscores Mexico City’s commitment to addressing urban challenges and fostering sustainable growth, positioning it as a key player in global urban discourse.
