Mexico City to Issue Commemorative 2026 World Cup License Plates
Mexico City, February 25, 2026 – The Mexico City government announced the upcoming release of special commemorative license plates for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. These limited-edition plates, available in three distinct designs, will be accessible for private vehicles starting March 9th, with online applications opening in the last week of February.
Clara Brugada, Head of Government, confirmed the initiative, stating, “This is a limited edition.” During a press conference, she explained that an initial batch of 60,000 plates will be issued across the three available models. Héctor Ulises García Nieto, Secretary of Mobility for Mexico City, clarified that only private vehicles, including new, used, and out-of-state cars, will be eligible to acquire these plates.
Designs and Features of the Commemorative Plates
The commemorative license plates will be available in three colors: yellow, white, and black. Each plate will feature the inscription “Placa conmemorativa Mundial 2026” (Commemorative 2026 World Cup Plate). The designs incorporate a golden soccer ball, alongside elements representative of the capital government’s graphic identity, such as an axolotl, hummingbirds, and flowers.
Further details on the plates reveal the inclusion of a Sun Stone motif with a soccer ball at its center and the phrase “México 2026,” accompanied by the national emblem. Additionally, the plates will showcase the official mascot of Mexico City for the event: an axolotl adorned with a headdress and holding a soccer ball.
Cost and Application Process
The cost for the commemorative 2026 World Cup license plates will be $1,500 Mexican pesos. Clara Brugada emphasized that this price is consistent with standard license plate change fees. Juan Pablo de Botton, Secretary of Administration and Finance, elaborated that this fee covers the rights for plate cancellation and registration, as well as the sticker and circulation card.
Applications for the commemorative plates can be made both online and in person. Ángel Tamariz, head of the Digital Public Innovation Agency, outlined the online process: applicants will need to log in with their Llave CDMX account on the portal placasmundial2026.cdmx.gob.mx or via the CDMX App, select their preferred plate color, securely pay the $1,500 fee online, and then choose between home delivery or pick-up at a module.
While physical plates will be available from March 9th, Tamariz confirmed that online requests can be submitted starting this week. “The portal will be live this week. So, users will be able to submit their applications, and from March 9th, they can pick them up or request home delivery,” he stated.
For those preferring in-person applications, processing will begin on March 9th at Semovi modules. The Secretariat of Administration and Finance will also open 40 additional service windows at locations including Santa Fe, Buenavista, Martín Carrera, and Aragoza. Special Semovi service modules will also be available in Colonia Juárez, Buenavista, and Av. Universidad.
De Botton anticipates that the issuance of these commemorative plates will generate 90 million pesos in revenue. This funding is earmarked for a significant initiative: the replacement of existing taxis with electric units, contributing to the city’s environmental goals.
