Mexico City, September 18 – The Mexico City government is preparing to inaugurate four new ‘Utopias’ recreational centers in the boroughs of Gustavo A. Madero, Tláhuac, Álvaro Obregón, and Milpa Alta. These new facilities are part of a broader initiative to offer free access to sports, culture, and community services, with unique features such as a ‘Galactic Adventure’ experience, an ice rink, and a golf course.
Four New Utopias Nearing Inauguration
According to the Second Activity Report of the Head of Government, Clara Brugada, the construction of these four Utopias is already complete and they are scheduled to open soon. The document, delivered to the local Congress by Government Secretary César Cravioto Romero, highlights that during the second year of the current administration, the first 12 Utopias in Mexico City have been completed, with eight already inaugurated:
- Utopía Mixiuhca, in Iztacalco
- Utopía Ceylán, in Azcapotzalco
- Utopía La Heroica, in Venustiano Carranza
- Utopía Cen-Tlalli – in Magdalena Contreras
- Utopía Acatitla, in Iztapalapa
- Utopía Elena Poniatowska Amor, in Coyoacán
- Utopía Centli, in Tlalpan
- Utopía México-Tenochtitlán, in Miguel Hidalgo
The newly completed Utopias are located at Deportivo Tecómitl (Tláhuac and Milpa Alta), Parque Japón (Álvaro Obregón), Deportivo El Triángulo (Tláhuac), and Deportivo Hermanos Galeana (Gustavo A. Madero). The Head of Government stated that the Milpa Alta Utopia would be the next to be inaugurated, while the Gustavo A. Madero facility is set to be the largest of all Utopias in CDMX.
Diverse Offerings and Thematic Anchors
Similar to the already inaugurated Utopias, the new centers will feature sports facilities such as semi-Olympic pools, soccer, basketball, and baseball fields. They will also host workshops in dance, music, painting, and other arts, alongside services from the Public Care System, including day care for seniors, community kitchens, laundromats, children’s rooms, medical offices, mammography services, and physical rehabilitation areas. Additionally, spaces for fair trade, like the Tienda de la Tierra and the Del Campo a la Ciudad program, will be integrated.
In June 2025, Head of Government Clara Brugada announced plans for 16 new Utopias, emphasizing that each would have an ‘anchor project’ for social, recreational, educational, scientific, or tourism purposes. These anchor projects are designed to offer unique services not found elsewhere in the city, making each Utopia a distinct attraction.
The Second Government Report details the specific themes for each of the upcoming Utopias:
- Gustavo A. Madero: Recreational, technological, and educational.
- Tláhuac: Festivals and carnivals.
- Álvaro Obregón: Environmental focus.
- Milpa Alta: Traditional festivals and fairs.
Gustavo A. Madero: A ‘Galactic Adventure’
The Utopia in Gustavo A. Madero, located at Deportivo Hermanos Galeana, will be the largest, covering 228,989 square meters of intervention and 8,314 square meters of construction. This facility will feature a ‘Galactic Adventure’ project, allowing children to explore the universe and experience what it’s like to be an astronaut. Attractions will include scaled universe surfaces, planetary orbit simulations, balance games, and a wind tunnel for an immersive experience. The project also includes an ice rink and a golf course, aiming to democratize sports access.
Tláhuac: Carnivals and Cartonería
The Tláhuac Utopia, situated at Deportivo El Triángulo, will span 23,350 square meters with 5,569 square meters of construction. Its theme will revolve around ‘festivals and carnivals,’ featuring exhibitions of carnival costumes and a cartonería school to promote the artistic talent of Tlaltenco, a community known for its alebrije tradition. A semi-Olympic pool, an integral health center, childcare facilities, and senior homes will complement the offerings.
Álvaro Obregón: Health and Sports at Parque Japón
The Álvaro Obregón Utopia, located in Deportivo Parque Japón, will cover 15,522 square meters with 6,697 square meters of construction. This center will provide free dental and gynecological consultations, a clinical laboratory, hydrotherapy, mammography, and other medical services. It will also boast an auditorium for 400 people, a semi-Olympic pool, a gym, and a boxing ring.
Milpa Alta: Traditional Games and Fairs
The Milpa Alta Utopia, set to be the next to open, will be located in the nearby community of San Juan Ixtayopan, within the Deportivo Tecómitl. With a surface area of 23,500 square meters and 5,569 square meters of construction, its anchor project will be a large traditional fair, showcasing and reinforcing traditional games and community recreational activities.
Significant Visitor Numbers and Investment
The Second Government Report also highlights the success of the already inaugurated Utopias, which have collectively received 1,521,364 visitors in 2026. The Mixiuhca Utopia in Iztacalco is the most visited, with 955,971 users since its inauguration in March 2026, averaging 6,548 daily visitors. It is estimated that by the end of 2026, the new Utopias will surpass 3 million visitors, with over 8 million globally when considering existing Utopias.
The investment in the Utopias project has reached 7 billion pesos since October 2024, with 4 billion pesos invested between September 2025 and September 2026. The 12 completed Utopias cover a total of 605,529 square meters. The report also reveals that planning and design work has begun for 18 additional Utopias, which will cover at least 126,000 square meters.
The Head of Government emphasizes that all Utopia services are free, making them public mechanisms for social equity by expanding opportunities for development and reducing travel times and costs for vulnerable families. This initiative aims to ensure the full exercise of the right to care, culture, and sports in dignified and high-quality architectural spaces.
