Comprehensive Support for Migrants in Ciudad Juárez
Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua – On September 6, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in collaboration with Central American consulates and authorities from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, organized a comprehensive aid day for migrants in Ciudad Juárez. The event provided essential services, including legal, medical, and consular assistance, as well as support for repatriation to their countries of origin. This initiative underscores efforts to promote local integration and ensure migrants are aware of their rights.
Focus on Integration and Rights Awareness
The primary objective of the aid day was to support migrants who have been residing in Ciudad Juárez for several months, helping them integrate into the local community. “We have identified that people are seeking integration. These efforts are also designed to ensure that migrant individuals can achieve local integration, where they know what rights they have by being here in Juárez,” stated an IOM representative.
The services offered were diverse and crucial for the migrant population. Attendees received advice on migration processes, health services, passport applications, birth certificates, and legal orientations. These services are particularly vital in a city where many migrants face challenges in obtaining necessary documentation and finding employment due to their legal status.
Consular Participation and Support Statistics
Consular authorities from Guatemala were actively involved, assisting their citizens who, according to records, number nearly 4,000 residing in Ciudad Juárez. “According to the national migration registry, there are approximately 3,800 Guatemalans residing in Ciudad Juárez. We have passport services that we will begin offering starting on the 15th of this month, and additionally, we have birth certificates,” a Guatemalan consular official explained.
Migrants expressed their gratitude for the support. One participant noted, “It’s a great help for all foreign countries. It’s a help for us because there are no consulates here. If you need help for all of us, it’s about getting work because of the paperwork, and all that costs a lot. But yes, one always, always gets ahead.”
The event also extended support to Salvadoran nationals in the city. While Ciudad Juárez is often a transit city, authorities estimate between 100 to 150 Salvadorans reside there and in other municipalities of Chihuahua. The aid day offered “one of the most viable options” for consular support and assistance from other institutions.
Addressing Repatriation and Future Efforts
Beyond integration and legal aid, the program also provided assistance for the repatriation of Mexican nationals to their places of origin within the Mexican Republic. This multifaceted approach highlights the commitment of the IOM and partner organizations to address the diverse needs of the migrant community.
The success of this aid day underscores the ongoing need for such initiatives in border cities like Ciudad Juárez, which serve as critical points for migrants seeking better opportunities or passage to other destinations.
