Motorcyclist killed in Iztapalapa hit-and-run, vehicle found abandoned in Nezahualcóyotl

Mexico City, January 5, 2026 – The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJCDMX) has launched an investigation into the negligent homicide of a motorcyclist following a fatal accident that occurred on Saturday night in the Vicente Guerrero housing unit, Iztapalapa. The victim, a 52-year-old man, was identified by a family member.

Fatal Collision in Iztapalapa

According to initial reports, the incident took place shortly after 10:00 PM at the intersection of Periférico Oriente and Eje 6 Sur. The motorcyclist was reportedly struck and dragged by a car, resulting in his death. Elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) were the first to report the incident.

The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the vehicle allegedly involved in the accident has been identified, including its license plates and registered owner. However, the identity of the driver at the time of the collision remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

Vehicle Found Abandoned

In a parallel development, authorities in the Estado de México located a car matching the description of the suspect vehicle abandoned in the streets of Nezahualcóyotl municipality. Agents from the Investigative Police are coordinating with the Mexiquense Prosecutor’s Office to secure the vehicle and conduct the necessary expert examinations.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Public Ministry has ordered the analysis of public and private surveillance camera footage. Additionally, efforts are underway to locate and interview potential witnesses who may have information regarding the tragic event.

Motorcycle Accidents on the Rise in Mexico City

This incident adds to a growing number of motorcycle accidents in Mexico City and its surrounding areas. Data from the National Survey of Health and Nutrition (Ensanut) indicates that 49.4% of non-fatal accident victims in Mexico were traveling on motorcycles or bicycles. Estimates based on Ensanut 2021-2023 reveal that the prevalence of non-fatal injuries affects approximately 1.6 million people, with 28.4% (around 475,000) experiencing permanent consequences requiring rehabilitation. Recent reports highlight other fatal motorcycle accidents in the metropolitan area.
